Solana Elementary School’s SBFP Narrative Report for

School Year 2021-2022

The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Bureau of Learner Support

Services-School Health Division (BLSS-SHD), maintains its commitment to provide good
nutrition to learners amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, it shall continue the
implementation of the School-Based Feeding Program (SBFP) for School Year 2020-2021 to
address hunger and encourage learners to enroll, contribute to the improvement of their
nutritional status, provide nourishment for their growth and development and help boost
their immune system, and enhance and improve their health and nutrition values.

Solana Elementary School’s feeding force have been able to assess and nurture the
nutritional needs of its learners despite the hindrance brought by the Covid-19 Pandemic.
The implementation of the School-Based Feeding Program has been one of the dire
responsibilities of the school especially that Covid-19 hindered the physical interaction
between learners and teachers. It’s also a much concern now that the rate of starving
students had risen up since the outbreak of the pandemic. Moreover, the school is much
dedicated to its duty in continuing to terminate the risks of negative factors brought by
hunger and malnutrition. Mrs. Elna B. Clerigo, grade 2 teacher and a dedicated SBFP-
Coordinator threshed-out learners that lack the standard weight and height (in accordance
with their age, body status etc.) from those normally weighed learners. In summarization of
data, there are a total of 104 learners that need to be regarded with more nourishment; 52
learners from kindergarten and 52 learners from grades 1 to 6. The SBFP primary
beneficiaries are all severely wasted, wasted, severely stunted, and stunted learners. In case
of excess funds, all learners in Last Mile Schools with 100 enrollees and below, the pupils-at-
risk-of dropping-out (PARDOs), indigenous people (IP) learners, and those coming from
indigent families, shall be considered as secondary beneficiaries. However, for School Year
(SY) 2021-2022 only, the primary beneficiaries shall be all incoming kindergarten learners,
and the Grade 1 to Grade 6 learners who were wasted and severely wasted based on the SY
2020-2021 SBFP report, except those who have moved to Grade 7. The continuation of the
new-normal School-Based Feeding Program commenced in the 18 th of November, year 2021.
As the traditional face-to-face interaction is still suspended, only parents/guardians of the
beneficiaries were allowed to enter the school. Minimum health standards such as wearing
of face masks, 2-meter distance from one person to another, frequent use of alcohols/hand
sanitizers, and minimal verbal contact were still strictly observed. The program started with
the distribution of food packs such as Nutritional Food Products (Hot Meals), E-Nutribun
(Enhanced Nutribun) and Milky Bun received from the drop-off point at Aplaya Elementary
School. Nutri-Foods Fortified Rice Porridge - each pack contains rice and flavor pack; each
pack is fortified with essential nutrients such as vitamin A and Iron. The E-Nutribun has an
improved texture, while still carrying the requirement of more or less 500 kilocalories. Other
micronutrients such as Vitamin A, iron, and iodine, were added by putting natural
ingredients like squash and carrot. Whilst the Milky Bun which weighs 160-165 grams per
piece, has 504 calories, 17.8 grams protein, 6.08 milligrams iron and 244 micrograms
vitamin A. The feeding coordinator with the aid of her fellow teachers distributed five (5)
pieces of NFPs; two (2) pieces of E-Nutribuns (distributed every Monday); and two (2)
pieces of Milky Buns (distributed every Wednesday) to each beneficiary. The distribution of
food packs is still on-going and will continue until further mandates from the education
department.

The SES’ Feeding Force encourage every learner, not just the recipients to practice a
healthy living. The school also acknowledge the importance and benefits of the SBFP to
learners; benefits such as alleviating hunger, reducing micronutrient deficiency and anemia,
preventing overweight and obesity, and increasing cognitive and academic performance
during distance learning. Moreover, SBFP empower the learners and give them proper
nutrition to go on with their everyday lives amid the pandemic and be more responsible
students; eventually helping them aspire to a brighter future.

Innovation in Providing Quality Education by

Eradicating Malnutrition amidst COVID-19 Pandemic.

This pandemic has hit each one of us. Our everyday lives have
changed, and unfortunately, most of us have experienced difficulty
breezing through this pandemic. Even before this pandemic, having food
on the table has been one of the struggles of some Filipino families. In
fact, a United Nations report reveals that even before COVID-19, 59
million Filipinos had already been experiencing food insecurity. This,
along with the unavailability of nutritious food for Filipino families
(especially children), have been two of the many persistent problems
here in our country. That is why the Solana Elementary School, following
the implementation of the Department of Education (DepEd), through
the Bureau of Learner Support Services-School Health Division (BLSS-
SHD), maintains its commitment to provide good nutrition to learners
amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The Solana ES’ Feeding Force remains
dedicated in providing quality education by providing the feeding
beneficiaries of the school the necessary and sustainable source of
nutritional meals to improve the health and welfare of every recipient.
As such, it shall continue the implementation of the School-Based
Feeding Program (SBFP) for School Year 2021-2022 to address hunger
and encourage learners to enroll, contribute to the improvement of their
nutritional status, provide nourishment for their growth and
development and help boost their immune system, and enhance and
improve their health and nutrition values. The distribution of E-Nutribuns
(Enhanced Nutribun), Milky Buns, and Pasteurized Milk have been
effectively imposed. But there have been some problems that the school
encountered. Some parents/guardians of the beneficiaries have been
unable to attend the distribution day. Hence, they were unable to
receive the provided nutriments for their child. That’s why innovations
have been made by the Solana ES’ Feeding Force. It has been decided
that the nutriments shall be delivered via tricab/motorcycle to the homes
of the beneficiaries who live in far-flung areas; and beneficiaries whose
parents/guardians are at-work. Another innovation made is feeding
while reading. A program implemented by all schools which is the
‘Reading Carousel’ which aims to help learners enhance their reading
and comprehension skills thru interactive means. The SES Feeding Force
decided to conjoin the Feeding Program with the event. In this case, the
learners’ mind were not the only ones filled with words and stories but
also their stomachs that were filled with nutrition from the food provided
to them. These are just the innovations made by the school for the
SBFP. Whilst the Department of Education has not yet imposed a
memorandum to return the mode of learning to in-person classes, these
innovations made will still continue.
