Tourism in Uttrakhand
• Introduction

• What is tourism?

• Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory

and practice of touring, the business of attracting,
accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the
business of operating tours.Tourism may be international,
or within the traveller's country. The World Tourism
Organization defines tourism more generally, in terms
which go "beyond the common perception of tourism as
being limited to holiday activity only", as people "traveling
to and staying in places outside their usual environment
for not more than one consecutive year for leisure and not
less than 24 hours, business and other purposes".
• According to Ziffer (1989), "Tourism involves traveling to
relatively undisturbed or uncontaminated natural areas with
the specific object of studying, admiring and enjoying the
scenery and its wild plants and animals, as well as any
existing cultural aspects (both past and present) found in
these areas."

• It promotes national integration and international

understanding. It helps in improving infrastructure, creates
employment opportunities and augments foreign exchange
• Types of tourism :

• Tourism as you know is practiced in numerous forms and is

enjoyed or practiced with a purpose to gaining enjoyment
at it's finest level or just to carry out a specified purpose.
There are many forms of tourism and let's discuss a few of
them.

• Atomic travelling -

• Atomic tourism is a relatively new type of tourism in which

visitors learn about the Atomic Age by traveling to
significant sites in atomic history such as museums with
• Enotourism -

• Enotourism, oenotourism, wine tourism, or vinitourism

refers to tourism whose purpose is or includes the
tasting, consumption or purchase of wine, often at or
near the source.[1] Where other types of tourism are
often passive in nature, enotourism can consist of visits
to wineries, tasting wines, vineyard walks, or even taking
an active part in the harvest.
• Geo tourism -

• A form of natural area tourism that specifically focuses on

landscape and geology. It promotes tourism to geosites
and the conservation of geo-diversity and an
understanding of Earth sciences through appreciation
and learning. This is achieved through independent visits
to geological features, use of geo-trails and view points,
guided tours, geo-activities and patronage of geosite
visitor centers.
• Medical tourism -

• Medical tourism refers to people traveling to a country

other than their own to obtain medical treatment. In the
past, this usually referred to those who traveled from
less-developed countries to major medical centers in
highly developed countries for treatment unavailable at
home.[1][2] However, in recent years it may equally refer
to those from developed countries who travel to
developing countries for lower-priced medical treatments.
• Necessity

• Tourism has become an important source of income for

many regions and even entire countries. The Manila
Declaration on World Tourism of 1980 recognized its
importance as "an activity essential to the life of nations
because of its direct effects on the social, cultural,
educational, and economic sectors of national societies,
and on their international relations.Tourism brings large
amounts of income into a local economy in the form of
payment for goods and services needed by tourists,
accounting as of 2011 for 30% of the world's trade in
services, and for 6% of overall exports of goods and
services. It also generates opportunities for employment
in the service sector of the economy associated with
tourism.
• The hospitality industries which benefit from tourism
include transportation services (such as airlines, cruise
ships, trains and taxicabs); hospitality services (such as
accommodations, including hotels and resorts); and
entertainment venues (such as amusement parks,
restaurants, casinos, shopping malls, music venues, and
theaters). This is in addition to goods bought by tourists,
including souvenirs. On the flip-side, tourism can degrade
people and sour relationships between host and guest.
• Growth of tourism

• The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) forecasts that

international tourism will continue growing at the average
annual rate of 4%.[97] With the advent of e-commerce,
tourism products have become one of the most traded
items on the internet.[citation needed] Tourism products
and services have been made available through
intermediaries, although tourism providers (hotels,
airlines, etc.), including small-scale operators, can sell
their services directly.[98][99] This has put pressure on
intermediaries from both on-line and traditional
shops.The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
forecasts that international tourism will continue growing
at the average annual rate of 4%.[97] With the advent of e-
commerce, tourism products have become one of the

Economic importance of tourism in
Uttrakhand
• Uttarakhand economy mainly relies on tourism
industry. Uttarakhand, being situated on the
foothills of Himalayas, comprises of numerous
hill stations which attract tourists from all
across the globe thereby bringing money to the
state. Apart from the hill stations, the wildlife
have also been a major attraction for tourism as
tourists come to visit the wildlife sanctuaries
such as Corbett National Park and the famous
Tiger Reserve. The total number of tourists to
visit Uttarakhand as per the census of 2006 were
19554717.
• The Himalayan region of Uttarakhand is a popular
tourism destination which possesses Alpine
conditions represented by cold winters with
prolonged snowfall, considerable rainfall in the
monsoon and pleasant summers. This climate is the
most significant factor in providing the state with its
only livelihood, that is tourism.
• The scope of tourism is considerable in this state,
whether it is nature, wildlife, adventure or pilgrimage.
The most popular destinations in Uttarakhand are:

• Haridwar
• Rishikesh
• Dehradun
• Mussoorie
• Almora
• Kedarnath
• Badrinath
• Yamunotri
• Gangotri
• Nainital
• Ranikhet
• Pithoragarh
• Problems of tourism -

• Although ecotourism has promoted conservation of

biological diversity, it has an adverse impact on the
peaceful environment and disturbs the flora and fauna. It's
main aim is to generate high revenue which leads to
encroachment on virgin lands, deforestation and
disruption of ecological system.
• Hence ecotourism should be printed under strict
supervision with an aim to protect the environment rather
than concentrating on profits and filling the pockets of
interests at the cost of distruptcy in the life of local people.
• Tax related complications, which really disturbs the
tourists.
• Lack of trained tourist guides.
• Problem of law and order especially in the border areas
like Jammu and Kashmir and North-east India.
• Lack of well developed infrastructure.
• Future Prospects -

• Uttrakhand has a great future in the industry of tourism as

it has the divine gifts of nature in abundance which tend to
behave as the major attraction for most of the tourists.
• Uttrakhand can excel in this industry if it follows the four
fold plan of action to promote tourism and exploit its
potential to the maximum suggested by the World tourism
and Travel Conceit(WTTC):
• Make travel and tourism a strategic and economic priority
giving ample opportunities in employment sector.
• Move towards open and comprise markets.
• Pursue sustainable development through planned and well
organized expansion of tourism.
• Provide incentives to private sectors and invest human
resources.
• Minimisation of impact on environment.
