Recombinant DNA

What is Recombinant
DNA?
Recombinant DNA (rDNA)
molecules are DNA molecules
formed by laboratory methods of
genetic recombination (such as
molecular cloning) to bring together
genetic material from multiple
sources, creating sequences that
would not otherwise be found in the
genome.
3 Methods of Recombinant
DNA
Genetic Transformation
-A process by which the genetic
material carried by an individual
cell is altered by the incorporation
of foreign (exogenous) DNA into
its genome.
Phage Introduction

-Is a method of recombinant

dna where phage or
bacteriophage is used to
destroy a cell.
Non-Bacterial Transformation
-This is a process very similar to
Transformation, which was
described above. The only
difference between the two is non-
bacterial does not use bacteria
such as E. Coli for the host.
Why is rDNA
important?
•Better Crops (drought & heat
resistance)
•Recombinant Vaccines (ie. Hepatitis
B)
•Production of clotting factors
•Production of insulin
•Production of recombinant
pharmaceuticals
