To detect substances that are acidic or
alkaline a substance is required which is
known as indicator
There are several types of indicators, such
as red and blue litmus, universal
indicator, natural indicator, etc. But in this
session i will explain some types of
natural indicators
1. Sappan wood / Caesalpinia
sappan or Kayu Secang is
used for material of paint.
But these materials can also
be used to be a natural
indicator material. After
dissolved in alcohol, it will
be obtained an orange-red
solution. If combined with
the acid solution, it will
change the color into
yellow. And if it combined
with base solution, the
color will be changed into
red.
2. Rose / Rosa Hybrida or
Mawar is used as an
ornamental plant at
home. The extracts of this
flower, can used for
natural indicator. The
extract can be colored
red, and when combined
with acid solutions
changed into dark-pink.
And when it combined
with base solution, the
color changed into dark
green.
3. Ginger / Zingiber officinale
or Jahe is used as a
medicinal beverage body
warmers. The extract of
ginger can used for natural
indicators, where the
extract is colored light-
yellow. When it combined
with acid solutions, the
color changed into dark-
yellow. And when it
combine with base
solutions, it’s changed into
light-orange.
We can use a variety of plants for natural
acid-base indicator, but the indicator
can’t show the number of pH of tested
solutions.
