BORROWING BRILLIANCE

THE SIX STEPS TO BUSINESS

INNOVATION BY BUILDING ON
THE IDEAS OF OTHERS
THE SIX STEP TO BUSINESS INNOVATION BY
BUILDING ON THE IDEAS OF OTHERS:
1 . Defining
Define the Problem you’re trying to solve

2 . Borrowing
Borrow ides from places with similar spaces

3 . Combining
Connect and combined this Borrowed ides

4 . Incubating
Allow the combination to incubate the solution

5 . Judging
Identify strength and weakness of the solution

6 . Enhancing
Eliminate the weak point while enhancing the strong ones
1.Defining

o Define the problem you are trying to solve

o How you define it will determine how you solve it

o Mistakes result from solving too narrow or too broad a problem

“A problem is the foundation of creative idea In other words creative idea

is built upon the problem trying to solve . Build upon solid ground and
your idea is much more likely to be realized. Solid ground is achieved by
taking the time to study your problem.”-- “David murray”
GOOGLE
Sergey Brin, a Ph.D candidate in computer
science, is assigned a data mining project
by his professor.

Larry page ,also working on his ph.D. Was

assigned by a different professor t design
and implement what was termed “ The
Digital Library”.

Larry and Sergey discussed their respective projects. They decided to figure out
together a better way to index the information available on the internet.

They used their web site links as their part of it’s ranking process.

This was distinctive from all other serch engine which is today cornstone of
google.
2. Borrowing
o Borrow ideas from places with a similar problem. These are the
construction materials for your solution.

o Bring together solution to comparable problems which are already in use–

from your cometitors, your industry or in the science or in the arts.

 First You copy what others have already thought and then create.

“ Borrowing is the material that you’ll find a metaphor, away to structure your
idea in terms of an existing idea”-- David Murray

o Difference between thief, smart guy, creative genius.

I readily absorb ideas from every source ,frequently starting

where the last person left off”– Thomas Edison
“The more formulation of a problem is far more essential then its solution” –

Albert Einstein
3.Combining
o Connect and combine these borrowed ideas.

o Making combinations is the essence of creativity.

o So, using the borrowed materials from the last step, find an appropriate
metaphor to structure your new idea.

“ A creative idea begins either consciously or subconsciously

with a meta phore or analogy.A meta phore intellectually
combines two ideas.”– David Murray
Filmmaker: George
Lucas

Star wars series: Combination

of mythology & and science
fiction.
4. Incubating
o Allow the combinations to incubate into a solution.

o Use tools like: sleeping on it, pausing, putting it away, and listening for
misunderstandings. In other words, often the most effective thinking is not
thinking at all.

o Let your subconscious mind stew over your new idea.and it tweaks and
improvement to your idea.

1.input Supply you subconscious with material and

ask specific questions.

Let your subconscious mind work without

2.Incubation conscious interference

Become conscious of newly constructed

3. output ideas and capture them.
 Input- Supply your subconscious with material and ask specific question.
 What specific problem am I trying to solve here?
 What solution can I borrow from else where?
 What new combination of solutions can I make?

 Incubation- Let your sub conscious mind work without conscious

interference.
 Go for a brisk walk
 Take a quick nap
 Pause and wait for your subconscious to respond

 Output- become conscious of newly constructed ideas and capture them.

5. Judging
o Identify the strength and weakness of the solution.

o Judgment is the result of viewpoint. Introduction the result of judgment.

When you judge a new idea, you achieve 3 different things:

(1) You identify any weaknesses which exists – so you know what you need to do
to eliminate flaws.
(2) You determine the strength of idea – and therefore its sustainability. Also,
once you know the strengths of idea, you can get busy enhancing those
strengths and bulking of them up.
(3) You develop the sixth sense for the ‘perfect solution’ – judging sharpens
your creative instincts so you recognise good idea when you see it.

Types of Judging
o Negative Judgement

o Positive Judgement

o Emotional Judgement

“Two roads diverged in wood ,and I- took the one less travelled by, and that

has made all the difference”– Robert frost

6.Enhancing
o Eliminate the weak points while enhancing the strong ones.

o Ideas evolve through trial and error adjustments. They self organize.

o Return to the first five steps:

-- re-define; re-borrow; re-combine; re-incubate and re-judge it all.

SOME EXAMPLES RELATED TO
BORROWING BRILLIANCE
(1) Uber's Borrowed Creativity
 Uber, the newfound transportation giant that allows its users to
request a luxury car on demand or provides a taxi services.

 Uber didn’t invent “Fleet Management”. Generally, armies or

navies uses the ‘Fleet management’.

 For example, In ‘logistics service’ like FedEx or UPS, the

company’s operations team figures out which driver is not only
in the closest proximity to you, but also has the lightest number
of stops ahead of yours, ensuring a timely pick up (and
ultimately delivery).
 In similar fashion, Uber also uses this type of
mechanism. Uber uses a complicated tracking
method to provide its on-demand “taxi” pickup.

 This idea wasn’t a reinvention of neither the wheel

nor logistic speed, it’s just a borrowing of idea.

 You can watch the car coming to get you on a live

GPS map with a timer.
