Background

Geothermal energy is a source of renewable energy in the form of thermal energy

(heat) generated and stored in the core of the earth. Currently geothermal energy
is starting to become the world's attention. The rising demand for energy and
rising oil prices have spurred other countries to reduce their dependence on oil
by harnessing geothermal energy to generate electrical energy.
Definition

Geothermal energy is thermal energy generated and stored in the earth. It’s
renewable, clean and sustainable. Resources of geithermal energy range from the
shallow ground to hot water and hot rock found a few miles beneath the earth
surface, and down even deeper to the extremely high temperatures of molten
rock called magma. Geothermal is one of the most promising energy alternatives
to fossil fuels and its currently utilized in 24 countries worldwide to produce
electricity.
Example

• 110 MW at Ulubelu in Lampung

• 110 MW at Lumut Balai in South Sumatra
• 40 MW at Lahendong
• 30 MW at Karaha
• 35 MW at Kamojang
The Advantages

• Environmentally Friendly
• A Renewable resource
• Potential capacity
• A Stable resource
• No Fuel Required
The Disadvantages

• Potential emissions
• Surface Instability
• High Investment Cost
• Possibility of Depletion of Geothermal Sources
Conclusion

Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that has been utilised

economically in many parts of the world for decades. A great potential
for an extensive increase in worldwide geothermal utilisation has been
proven. The renewable energy sources can contribute significantly to the
mitigation of climate change and more so by working as partners rather
than competing with each other.
