Rizal – Pastells Debate on Religion
• The debate started when Father Pastells sent Rizal a book by
Sarda - The debate can be read in (4) four letters,
• Rizal revealed his anti-Catholic ideas. He was bitter against the
friars because they commit abuses under the cloak of religion.
• Father Pastells tried to bring back Rizal to the fold of
Catholicism
• However, Rizal continued to be a Catholic
• Duel - a contest with deadly weapons arranged between two people in
order to settle a point of honor.
• Mr. Juan Lardet, a Frenchman was challenged to a Duel by Rizal
because of the poor quality of logs in Rizal’s land.
• An apology was the solution to the problem.
• This also showed that Rizal was a sensitive person.
Rizal and Father Sanchez
• Fr. Francisco de Paula Sanchez, Rizal’s favorite Spanish
Jesuit professor in Ateneo
• He was sent to Dapitan along with Fr. Obach and Fr. Jose
Vilaclara to reconcile the Catholic Church with Rizal.
• At the same time Rizal gave his manuscript of Estudios
Sobre La Lengua Tagala (study of Tagalog Language) to
Father Sanchez.
Idyllic Life in Dapitan
• Idyllic - extremely happy or peaceful
• August 1893 – Visited by his mother, sisters Trinidad,
Maria and Narcisa and nephews Teodosio, Estanislao,
Mauricio and Prudencio
• Put up his house by the seashore of Talisay
• Built a school for boys
• Hospital for his patients

Encounter with the Friar’s Spy
• Florencio Namanan – the real name of Pablo Mercado

• Pablo Mercado claimed to be Rizal’s relative by showing


evidence such as a photo of Rizal and buttons with initials
“P.M”.
• His agenda was to spy on Rizal’s works and activities.
• Rizal became suspicious and reported “P.M” to Captain
Juan Sitges and ordered the arrest and investigation of
“P.M” immediately.
• The mission was not for assassination but to spy only.
Physician in Dapitan
• Time wherein Rizal successfully operated his mother’s right eye

• Free medicine and treatment to the poor

• Interested in local medicines and in the use of medicinal


plants.
• Was paid by rich patients
Water System in Dapitan
• As a perito agrimensor (expert surveyor), he read
engineering books and applied it by construction a
system of waterworks in Dapitan.
• Mr. H.F. Cameron – an American engineer,
praised Rizal’s engineering feat.
Community Projects for Dapitan
• Drained marshes surrounding Dapitan in order to get rid of
malaria.
• Equipped the town with a lighting system consisted of
coconut oil lamps placed in the dark streets of Dapitan.
• Beautification of Dapitan (he remodeled the town plaza
and he made a huge relief map of Mindanao)
As a Teacher
• Built a school in Dapitan
• Made the Hymn of Talisay
• Besides writing, language and geography, Rizal also
taught wrestling, gymnastics, boxing, wrestling, stone-
throwing, swimming, arnis and boating.
Contributions to Science
Rhacophorus rizali

• He sailed throughout Mindanao with his pupils in


his baroto (sailboat) and explored the jungles and
coasts seeking specimens of various animals.
• Specimens in exchange for scientific books and
surgical instruments.
• Discovered rare specimens like: Draco rizali (a
flying dragon), Apogonia rizali (a small beetle), and
Rhacophorus rizali (a rare frog).
Linguistic Studies
• He already knew 19 languages namely: Tagalog, Ilokano,
Spanish, Latin, Greek, English, French, German, Arabic,
Hebrew, Sanskrit, Dutch, Catalan, Italian, Chinese, Japanese,
Portuguese, Swedish, and Russian.
• During his exile, he learned and studied Bisayan (Cebuano),
Subanum, and Malay languages, which sums up a total of 22
learned languages.
Artistic Works in Dapitan
• To pursue his artistic activities, Rizal:
• 1.Contributed paintings to the Sisters of Charity who
were preparing the sanctuary of the Holy Virgin
• 2.Made sketches of persons and things that attracted him
in Dapitan
• 3.Modeled a statuette called “The Mother’s Revenge” to
stress the moral of the incident where a puppy of his dog,
Syria, was eaten by a crocodile
• 4.Constructed a statue of a girl called “The Dapitan Girl”,
a wood carving of Josephine Bracken (Rizal’s wife)
• 5.Made a bust of St. Paul for Father Pastells
As a Farmer
• Rizal acquired total land holdings of 70 hectares where 6,000 hemp
plants, 1,000 coconut trees and numerous fruit trees, sugarcane,
corn, coffee and cacao were planted.
• He planned to establish an agricultural colony in Sitio Ponot
because it was ideal for raising cacao, coffee, coconuts and cattle.
However, this did not materialize due to lack of support from the
government
As a Businessman
• Ramon Carreon – Rizal’s business partner in
Dapitan.

• Hemp industry – Rizal’s most profitable business


• Rizal also engaged in lime manufacturing.
• On January 1, 1895, organized the
Cooperative Association of Dapitan Farmers
Rizal’s Inventive Ability

• Sent a gift to Blumentritt called “sulpukan” –


a wooden lighter based on the principles
of compressed air.
• A wooden machine for making bricks
“My Retreat”
• Upon restoring her eyesight, Dona Teodora
returned to Manila. Seeing how busy Rizal is,
she regretted neglecting her muses. She
requested Rizal wrote “Mi Retiro” relating his
serene life as an exile in Dapitan
Rizal and Josephine Bracken
• Josephine Bracken – Irish girl of sweet eighteen who was born on
Hong Kong Josephine Bracken
• Mr. George Taufer – man who adopted Josephine after her
mother died childbirth
• Manuela Orlac – Filipina companion who accompanied
Josephine Bracken to Dapitan
• Rizal and Josephine Bracken decided to get married but Father
Obach refused to marry them.
• To avoid tragedy, Josephine accompanied Mr. Taufer back to
Manila.
George Taufer
• Having no priests to marry them, Rizal and Josephine married
themselves before the eyes of God.
• The two were happy for they were expecting for a baby.
However, the baby was premature and lived for only (3) three
hours. He was named “Francisco”.
Rizal and the Katipunan
• Pio Valenzuela – informed Rizal of the plan of
Katipunan during the meeting at a little river called
Bitukang Manok.
• Raymundo Mata – blind man who came with
Valenzuela to camouflage his emission
• Rizal objected Bonifacio’s project because:
1. The people are not ready for a revolution
2. Arms and funds must first be collected before
raising the cry of revolution. Pio

Volunteers as Military Doctor in Cuba
• Rizal wrote to Governor General Ramon Blanco
offering his services as military doctor.
• Governor Blanco later notified Rizal of the
acceptance of the offer.
“The Song of the Traveler“
• Upon receiving the acceptance of his offer to go to Europe then to Cuba
to help in the curing of patients suffering yellow fever, he wrote a poem
“El Canto del Viajero” - “The Song of the Traveler“
Adios, Dapitan
• July 31, 1896 – Rizal’s exile in Dapitan finally came to an end.

• Espana- steamer which brought Rizal to Manila from Dapitan.

• As farewell, the town brass of Dapitan played the dolorous


Funeral March of Chopin
• Rizal gazed for the last time on Dapitan with his hands waving
in farewell salute to its kind and hospitable folks.
• “I have been in that district for 4 years, 13 days and a few
hours.”
