NOLI ME TANGERE PUBLISHED BERLIN (1886)


Two reasons why 1886 Bleak Winter was
Memorable in life of Rizal
• 1. It was a panitful episode for he was hungry, sick,
and despondent in a strange city.

• 2. It brought him joy because his first novel, Noli


Me Tangere came off the press in March 1887.
Idea of Writing a Novel in the Philippines

THE WRITING OF THE NOLI
• 1884 finished about one half of the novel in madrid.
• 1885 After studying At central university Of Madrid He
finished one half of the second haft.
- Finished of the last fourth or the novel in the Germany.
• April-june 1886- wrote the Last few chapters of noli at
Welhelmfeld
• February 1886 Rizal made a final revisions Of the
manuscript Of Noli in Berdin.
- He was depressed during this time Almost Thew the novel
into the fire.
VIOLA, SAVIOR OF NOLI
• Maximono Viola- Scion of rich Of rich family Of San Miguel,
Bulacan
- Wrote telegram to rizal Stating the he would come To Berlin.
- He shocked the rizal living in poverty.
- Financed printing of Noli.
- Rizal deleted few passageages in his manuscript, including
whole chapter “ ELIAS, SALOME” to save printing Expenses.
- February 21, 1887- Rizal founded a printing shop name “
Berliner Buchdruckrel- Action- Gesselscraft” with the
lowest rate of 300 For 2,000 copies Of the novel.
RIZAL SUSPENDED AS FRENCH SPY
• Chief of police Of Berdin Paid a sudden Visit to Rizal’a
Boarding house requesting to see his passport.
• Gave Rizal 4 days to comply with the documents. Otherwise he
would he Departed.
• Because of Rizal frequentl Visit to the little village and Town in
Rural areas, its aroused the German authorities that he was a
french spy
• Rizal explained to the police chief in fluent German, that he
was no a french spy, but a Filipino ethnologist.
• The police chief was satisfied and allowed him to stay freely in
German.
PRINTING OF NOLI FINISHED
TITLE OF THE NOVEL
• “Touch Me Not”
• March 5, 1887
- Rizal wrote to Felix Hidalgo Stating the origin of the
title.
• “ Noli Me Tangere” ate word taken from the Gospel
of st. Luke which signifies” do not touch me”
• Rizal made a mistake. It should be the Gospel of st.
John (chapter 20, verses 13-17)
SYNOPSIS OF THE NOLI
• It begins in the reception given by Capitan Tiago. (San De Los
Santos)
• Ibarra arrives in the event producing favorable impression
among the guest for Padre Damaso.
• After dinner, ibarra left Capitan Tiago’s house to return to his
hotel.
• On the way, Lieutenant Guevara told him the story of his
father’s death in San Diego.
• Don Rafael was thrown in prison, were he died unhappily.
• Ibarra thanked the kind Spanish Lieutenant and find out the
truth about his father’s death.
• The following morning, Ibarra visited Maria Clara.
He went to San Diego to visit his father’s grave.
The grave-digger told Ibarra that the corpse of Don
Rafael was removed by order of the Spanish priest.
He met Padre Salvi on his way and pound on the priest
demanding redress for desecrating his father’s mortal
remains.
Padre Salvi told him that the had nothing to do with it
but was Padre Damaso who was responsible for it.
In his Town, Ibarra met several interesting people such
as philosopher Tasio.
THE TALE OF SISA
• Sisa, a formerly rich girl become poor because she
married a gambler and a westrel.
• She become crazy because she lost her two boys,
basilio and Crispin, the joy of her wrenched life.
• Capitan Tiago, Maria Clara and Auntie Isabel arrived
in San Tiago.
• Ibarra and his friend gave a picnic at the lake.
• An incident of the picnic was the Saving of Elias life
by Ibarra.
• Another incident was the rendering of a beautiful
song by Maria Clara.
• After the meal waas over, Ibarra and Capitan Tiago
played chess, while Maria Clara and her friends
played the “ WHEEL OF CHANGE”
• The next day, ibarra visited old Tasio to consult him
on his pet project about the school house.
THE FEAST
• Meanwhile, San Diego was merrily preparing
for its annual fiesta, in honor of its patron saint
San Diego de Alcala, whose feast day is the 11th
of November.
• During the fiesta There was a high mass in the
church officiated by Padre Salvi.
• Eliaa quietly moved to ibarra, whos was
kneeling and praying by Maria’s side, and
warmed him to be careful during the ceremony
of the laying of the corners stone of the school
house.
AFTER THE FEAST
• Maria Clara become ill. She was treated by a qua ck
Spanish physician, Tiburcio de Espadaña, whose
wife had hallucinations OB being a Spanish castillan.
• She wanted to be called “ Doctora Doña Victorina de
los Reyes De Espadaña.
• She introduced capital tiago’s young Spanish, Don
Alfonso Linares de Espadaña, cousins of his husband
and godson of Padre Damaso’s brother on law .
THE STORY OF ELIAS
• The story of Elias was like that of Sisa, a tale of
pathos and tragedy.
• His wife was pregnant and become a prostitute in
order to support her sick husband and their son.
• After giving birth to her second son and death of
her husband, she fled with her sons to the
mountain.
• Years later, The first boy became dreaded tulisan
named balat. He terrorized the province.
• He’s young brother fled and became a trusted
laborer in the house of Rich man in Tayabas. He fell
in love with the masters daughter.
• The girls father enraged by romance, investigated his
past and found out the truth. The unfortunate father
(elias father) was senT to jail send, why the girl give
birth to twins, A boy (Elias) ang girl.
• Their rich grandfather took care of them, keeping
secret their scandalous origin. And reared them as
Rich Children.
• And Old male Servant was Forced to testify in court
and Truth came out that he was their real fahter.
• Elias and his sister left Tayabas to hide.
Since then, they lived a vagabond life.
THE ESCAPE OF ELIAS AND IBARRA
• Elias, learning of ibarra’a arrest, burning all the
papers that might incriminate his friend and set
ibarra’s house on fire.
• He a ibarra jumped into a banca loaded with sacate
(grass)
• Ibarra stopped at the house of Capitan Tiago to say
goodbye to maria Clara.
• After bidding maria clara farewell, he returned to
the banca
• He and elia9 padded up the pasig river toward
laguna de bay.
• A police boat with the guardian civil on board
pursued them. Elias jumped out of the water and
swam towards the shor.
• In this way, he diverted the attention of the soldiers,
thereby giving ibarra a chance to escape.
• Elias reached the shore and staggered into forest. He
met Basilio who was weeping over his dead mother’s
body.
• He told him to make a pyre on which their bodies
were to be burned to ashes.

EPILOGUE
• Maria Clara, out of her loyalty to the memory of
ibarra, entered the San Clara nunnery.
• Padre Salvi left the Parish of San Diego and became a
chaplain of th3 nunnery.
• Padre damaso was transferred to a remote province,
but the next morning he was found dead.
• Capitan Tiago Became an opium addict and a human
wreck.
• Doña Victorina, had taken to wearing eyes- glasses
because of weakening eyesight.
• Linares, died of dysentery and was buried in paco
cemetery.
• The alferes was promoted major. He returned to Spain,
leaving behind his shabby mistress, Dona Consolacion.
• The novel ends with maria clara, an unhappy nun in
santa clara forever lost to the world.
The “Noli” Based on the Truth
• Unlike Many literary work, it was a true story of the Philippines condition during the last
decades of the Spanish rule.
• The places, characters, and situation really existed.
• “I can prove them” Rizal said.

• Ibarra and Elias represented Rizal
• Tasio the philosopher was Paciano
• Padre Salvi was Padre Antonio Piernavieja
• Capitan Tiago was Capitan Hilario Sunico of San Nicolas
• Doña Vitorina was Dona Agustina Medel
• Basilio and Crispin- Crisostomo brother of hagony
• Padre Damaso- typically domineering friar who was arrogant, immoral and anti-Filipino
MISSING CHAPTER OF THE NOLI
• Elias and Salome was originally the 25th chapter of
Noli. However, Rizal Removed it due to Financial
constraints.
• SUMMARY
- Salome waits desperately for elias, thinking that
he would pass by the water any time soon. Elias,
however, is somewhere to be seen because he is
in fact hiding from the authorities who are
currently patrolling around the lake. When the
two finally get to meet, Salome tells the youth of
her plan to Mindoro and live with her.
- But elias refuses.
RIZAL’S FRIENDSPRAISED THE NOLI
• Blumentritt’s letter- was the most significant
congratulatory letter Rizal received.

• Dr. Antonio Ma. Regidor- a Filipino patriot and


lawyer who had been exiled due to his complicity in
the Cavite Muniny of 1872
• Wrote to Rizal on may 3, 1887 in London
“ he who does not know how to look back at where he came from will
never get to his destination”
