Lesson Objectives
• Explain 21st Century literacy
• Enumerate the different competencies
connected to 21st Century literacy
• Recognize the different 21st Century literacies
Do this!
• You’ll be divided into groups of five
• Each group should watch videos, take note of the
important ideas and discuss it to the group
• One will act as group facilitator to guide the
discussion
• Two will take note of the discussions in the group
and the reporting
• Two will report the group output to the class
• In the end, the group should come up with a mind-
map showing what you understand about the videos
21st Century Literacy
• Literacy is and will always be a collection
of communicative and cultural practices shared
among members of particular groups (Farisi,
2016).
• As society and technology change, so does
literacy.
• The 21st Century demands individuals to acquire
a wide range of competencies and skills that can
be gained from a wide range of literacies being
incorporated in education.
What does it mean to be Literate in
the 21st Century?
• In today’s society the aim of literacy highlights
the need to be able to read and understand
concepts and ideas across a growing range of
literacy practices drawing upon numerous skills
and abilities.
• According to Carrington & Robinson (2009)
“literacy is not just about decoding marks on a
page, it is also about performing social acts of
meaning, where meaning and practices vary
according to context”.
