A MODEL ON COLONISING MARS

Intro to mars….
• The planet lies in the solar system and is a neighbour of earth.
• The crust is rich in certain elements and minerals even radioactive
ones.
• The soil is unsuitable for plant growth .
• The planet has polar ice caps, liquid water underground , and large
valleys.
• It is a cold radioactive desert. Even the ground is poisonous to some
extent .
Basic plan for semi permenant settlement

• The basic plan for settlement is as follows

• A large palladium glass dome covers the settlement to counter
effects of gamma radiation and
Phase 1
• The scouting and mapping of mars’s terrain has been almost
completed .
• Lets assume here that the scouting work by satellites and rovers has
been done and we now know of a suitable spot to build our base.
PHASE 2:
EnErgy….
The main hub for mars missions shall be the moon as
a check post sort of arrangement.
A few problems we may face…..
Mars has a very poor solar output rendering solar
energy insufficient. This is further obscured by dust
storms . Even wind power and geothermal energy
has not useful.
An initial step might be to use nuclear energy which
can be brought from earth.
•ThE brEaThing problEm……
• mars’s atmosphere is only 1 % as dense as
eatrh’s and mostly made of CO2 . The
outposts need to be served with nitrogen and
oxygen in a pressurized cabin to make an
artificial atmosphere to enable people to live .

•The radiation problem

• A person is subjected to a lot of radiation on
mars’s surface . This problem can be tackled
by covering the base with a layer dry co2 and
a layer of dirt . For astronauts to venture out
special radiation proof suits are needed which
can be coated with boron.
•ThE dusT….
mars dust if fine and poisonous. This can damage
electronics and stick to space suits which can
contaminate the living quarters of astronauts .
• We can also use titanium padded building material
as titanium is light and strong. Even special
spacesuits that don’t allow mars dust to stick on
them can be used(mars dust is electrostatically
charged.

•Food..
• Food can be grown using hydroponics as water is
available in abundance at the polar ice caps . Human
discharges can be used as a fertilizer.

•Fitness..
• Due to lower gravity than that of the earth the
astronauts will face muscular degeneration , fatigue
and bones density decreases . So the astronauts will
have to constantly workout to keep themselves fit.
•Lonliness….
• Being up there with few people and mostly indoors
can drive one insane so the astronauts need to
constantly be changed.

• Once we solve these issues and increase the size of

the outpost the base camp will become stronger and
more stable and also a continuous supply of needed
resources form the earth has to reach there timely .

fresh need to keep the nuclear
crew base running fuel

Supply of
resources
A big hiccup on the way

• Here’s where things get tricky….the only period of

time where the earth can send resources and crew
to mars is a narrow window every two years , so if
an emergency arises we may not be help those on
mars..we may arrive to planet littered with corpses.
•PHASE 3 :
• AFTER THIS EXTREMELY TIRING YEARS MARS MIGHT
FINALLY BE READY TO HAVE US AS A CIVILIZATION ..THO
THIS DREAM IS FAR AWAY WE ARE WORKING ON
IT…SPACEX PLAN TO SEND THE FIRST MAN TO MARS
BY 2032.

• THE LIKES OF NASA AND ELON MUSK AND HIS SPACE X

ARE TRYING TO MAKE THIS DREAM COME TRUE
ALTHOUGH ELON MUSK AND SAID THAT A PROGRAM
LIKE THIS WOULD REQUIRE HUGE FINDINGS LIKE
AROUND 5 – 6 BILLION DOLLARS PER PERSON WHICH
HE AIMS TO BRING DOWN TO ABOUT 200000 DOLLARS
PER HEAD .
• ALTHOUH THIS TASK IS MOUNTAIN THAT SEEMS IMPOSSIBLE TO CLIMB WE
HUMANS HAVE NEVER STOPPED TRYING. SO YAEH THIS MAYBE DANGEROUS
AND EXPENSIVE AND WHATNOT BUT ANYTHING WE HUMANS SET OUR
MINDS TO WE ACCOMPLISH IT…

• SO WHO KNOWS , MAYBE IN A FEW DECADES WE MIGHT SEE THE LIGHTS OF

CIVILIZATION SHING BRIGHT ABOVE US HERE ON EATRH, ON MARS…
THANK YOU..
