2015 Landslide along

Kennon Road in Tuba,

Benguet
Introduction and Background
 Like many other areas of the Philippines, the Baguio
area is subject to many factors favoring the
occurrence of landslide : the mostly mountainous
terrain; a humid climate with frequently occurring
typhoons and associated heavy rainfall;
earthquakes; deforestation caused by human
activity.
 Landslide is a form of mass wasting that includes a
wide range of ground movements, such as rockfalls,
deep failure of slopes, and shallow debris flows.
Landslides can occur underwater, called a
submarine landslide, coastal and onshore
environments.
 Kennon Road (formerly the Benguet Road and also
known as the Rosario–Baguio Road) is a roadway in
Benguet Province in the Philippines connecting the
mountain city of Baguio to the lowland towns of
Rosario and Pugo in La Union province.
 The project was begun in 1903 and opened for travel
on January 29, 1905.
 Kennon Road for two days (July 14-15, 2015) as heavy
rain dumped by Tropical Storm “Egay” (international
name: Linfa) triggered landslides along the route. With
a report from Vincent Cabreza, Inquirer Northern
Luzon.

General Problem

Landslide was
primarily caused
by the heavy
rains due to
Typhoon “Egay”.
General Objective
To be able to find a solution in
preventing a possible landslide due to
heavy rainfall.
 To be able to act accordingly and
instantly to the possible incidents.
Areas of Consideration
STRENGTH:
o One of the three main access road
that lead to the highland city of
Baguio.
o Tourist attraction
o Time efficiency
Areas of Consideration
WEAKNESS:
o Poor road condition
o Prone to accident
o Commuters will not feel safe
Areas of Consideration
OPPORTUNITIES:
o It can attract more tourist.
o Transportation of product will take
less time.
o Beautiful Sceneries can be seen.
o Local Businesses will be accessible
to vast areas.
Areas of Consideration
THREAT:
o Geological characteristics of the area
is vulnerable to landslides
Alternative Courses of Action

o Installing a Concrete Retaining Wall

ADVANTAGES:
1) Providing functional support for keeping soil in place,

2) Helpful in preventing flashfloods.

3) Prevent damage to property or surrounding structures.

Alternative Courses of Action

o Installing a Concrete Retaining Wall

DISADVANTAGES:
1) Possible to have a Narrow roadway
2) Requires maintenance for better stability
3) Vertical Cracks
Alternative Courses of Action

o Proper installation of Drainage

System
ADVANTAGES:
1) Prevents water accumulation
2) Reduces soil erosion
Alternative Courses of Action

o Proper installation of Drainage

System
DISADVANTAGES:
1) Expensive
2) Maintenance
3) Can contaminate bodies of water
Alternative Courses of Action

o Building emergency station

ADVANTAGES:
1) Faster response in the area of accidents.
Alternative Courses of Action

o Building emergency station

DISADVANTAGES:
1) Expensive budgeting.
Recommendation
o Based on the solutions, we recommend to
strengthen the retaining walls by means of
using materials that is adequate to the
type of soil and yet proficiently
economical. Also, we can sum up that the
stations can be way cheaper if we just put
the things necessary for the incidents that
may happen on the area.
Concrete Crib Gravity Retaining Wall
Plan of Action
o Restore road caused by the landslide;

o Build retaining walls, drainage system and

emergency station; and

o Promote Kennon Road as safer than the

other access to Baguio.

o Road Maintenance
