LEARNING THE BASIC OF

SPORT PARTICIPATION
CHAPTER 2
Learning Outcomes:

a. Understand the importance of eating and

hydration during participation in sport activities.
b. Follow safe practices and etiquette during
participation in sport activities.
c. Recognize the importance of warm-up exercises
before doing sport activities.
Food intake and Energy Expenditure
 When we consume plant and animal products,
the carbohydrates, fats, and protein are broken
down during digestion, releasing energy and
nutrients.

 Some of the energy from these foods is used

immediately for various body functions, and
some is stored as energy to be used at a later
time.

 The chemical energy provided by food is

ultimately transformed into mechanical energy.
Food intake and Energy Expenditure

 When we exercise, we use the energy in

food to make the muscles contract

 Energy is measured in units called

calories. Most of the food we eat contains
energy, and everything we do (even
sleeping) requires energy, resulting in
caloric expenditure
HYDRATION IN SPORTS
 drink about two cups of fluid
two hours before the activity
 during the activity, try to drink
4-6 ounces every 15-20 minutes
to keep your muscles well-
hydrated
 drink up after the activity
What to drink?
Water
Sports drink
Fresh juices
What to avoid?
x Coffee
x Teas
x Soft drinks
x Energy drinks
x Alcoholic drinks
COMMON SIGNS OF DEHYDRATION:
 Dry or sticky mouth
 Thirst
 Headache
 Dizziness
 Cramps
 Excessive fatigue
RISKS OF DEHYDRATION:

Affect performance in sport

Heat cramps
Heat exhaustion
Heat stroke
IMPORTANCE OF WARM-UP/COOL
DOWN ACTIVITIES
It should include light cardiovascular activity
like jogging followed by static and dynamic
stretching. The warm-up should:
 Elevate body temperature
 Loosen muscles and tendons to increase the
range of motion in various joints
 Increase blood flow throughout the body
Cooling down after play is
important in preventing injuries.
Avoid lying down straight
after play. Walk around or just
do a few simple stretching
exercises to cool down and relax
the body.
