Earthquake-Prone

• An earthquake occurs when two blocks of the earth’s crust slide past one
another after having been stuck together in one place for a long time,
because of fiction on the fault, while the rest of the crust away from the
edges has been slowly moving.

Earthquake-Prone
• Located at the eastern portion of Makati is the West Valley Fault System.
A Study supported by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) shows
that in a worst case scenario with a magnitude of 7.2 earthquake, Makati
would suffer:

• Human casualty
• Fire damage
• Building damage

Earthquake-Prone: Hazard

• Aftershock is basically a smaller earthquake that happens after the main

quake, in the same area.

• If it's stronger than the first quake, it's renamed as the main earthquake and
the original main quake becomes known as a foreshock.

Earthquake-Prone: Exposure

• Post traumatic stress - Even when people don’t get hurt by an earthquake, it
can still have lasting effects on the psyche. After serious trauma of any kind,
some people may end up with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that affects
them years after a damaging earthquake occurs.

Earthquake-Prone: Vulnerability

• Shallow crevasses can form during earthquake-induced landslides, lateral

spreads, or from other types of ground failures, but faults do not open up
during an earthquake.

Earthquake-Prone: Conclusion

• Earthquakes are inevitable natural hazards with the potential for causing large
numbers of fatalities and injuries, major property and infrastructure damage, and
serious disruption of everyday life.
• However, a systematic risk assessment process can help keep earthquake losses to
a minimum. This methodology called risk management, is a process for
determining which hazards should be addressed, what priority they should be
given, what should be done, and what countermeasures should be used.
