Introduction

• Karsanbhai was born in 1945, in Ruppur village in
north Gujarat in a family of farmers.
• He graduated in Chemistry at the age of 21in 1966.
• Initially, he worked as a lab technician in the new
cotton mills, Ahmedabad.
• Ten he worked as lab assistant in the geology and
mining department of the government of Gujarat.
Journey towards entrepreneurship.
• He wanted to earn more than what he was earning.
• So in 1969, he started a small scale enterprice.
• Karsan bhai manufactured phosphate-free Synthetic
Detergent Powder at the Gujarat Government’s
Department of Mining and Geology, and started selling it
locally.
• He sold this new yellow powder at INR 3.50 per kg, at a
time when HUL’s (Hindustan Unilever) Surf was priced
at INR 15. And named it Nirma; after his daughter name
Nirupama (who had died in an accident).
• Fuelled by housewife-friendly advertisement jingles.
• Overall nirma has a 20% market share in soaps and
about 35% in detergents.
• Nirma also has successful operations in neighbouring
countries.

• Udyog ratna by federation of association of SSI of

gujarat.
• Outstanding industrialist of eighties by gujarat
chamber of commerce and industry.
• Excellence in corporate governance award by by
rotary international district.
• Patel has been conferred with Padma Shri Award for
the year 2010.
