INTRODUCTION

The Bicol region was known as Ibalon.

The Aeta from Camarines Sur to
Sorsogon strongly suggest that
aborigines lived there long ago, but
earliest evidence is of middle to late
Neolithic life.
A barangay (village) system was in
existence by 1569. Records show no
sign of Islamic rule nor any authority
surpassing the datu (chieftain).
THE REGION IS COMPOSED OF SIX PROVINCES:
ALBAY – LEGAZPI CITY
CAMARINES NORTE - DAET
CAMARINES SUR - NAGA
SORSOGON – SORSOGON CITY
CATANDUANES - VIRAC
MASBATE – MASBATE CITY

CAMARINES SUR IS THE LARGEST PROVINCE IN AREA

AND POPULATION, OCCUPYING 5,481.6 KM2 (2,116.5 SQ
MI) OR AROUND 30.4% OF THE TOTAL LAND AREA WITH A
POPULATION OF 1,822,371.

 CATANDUANES IS THE SMALLEST IN AREA AS WELL AS

POPULATION WITH ONLY 1,511.5 KM2 (583.6 SQ MI) OR
8.4% OF THE TOTAL REGIONAL AREA AND A POPULATION
OF 246,300.

HISTORY
Known centuries ago as the Tierra de Camarines, the
province is distinctly Spanish-founded settlement. Its name
having been derived from "camaronchones" or "camarines", a
Spanish word for "kamalig" referring to small nipa or
bamboo-made huts by the natives.
Naga City, the former capital of Camarines Sur, was founded
in 1573 as “Nueva Caceres” – namesake of the Province in
Spain and among the original five royal cities of the colony.
It was designated as the Province’s Capital by virtue of
Philippine Legislative Act No. 2711 approved on March 10,
1917 until June 6, 1955, when Pili, the adjoining town was
declared the Provincial Capital by virtue of Republic Act
1336 up to the present time.
Language/Dialect
Bikol is the local and most common dialect, with Naga
Bikol as the standard version. English and Tagalog are
likewise used. A growing number of Chinese and Muslim
communities speak their own languages.

HISTORY
The province, formerly known as "Catanduan,"
"Catandognan," and finally, "Catanduanes," derived its name
from the "tando" trees which then abound in the Island.

In 1573, Juan de Saceldo explored Catanduanes. Later, on

January 6, 1576, Fr. Diego de Herrera with nine Augustinians
sailed from Acapulco to the Philippines aboard the galleon,
"Espiritu Santo."

Language/Dialect
Bicol is the native tongue but with different nuances and
variations, especially when one goes up to the northern
towns like Pandan, Caramoran, and Panganiban. English and
Tagalog are commonly spoken and understood.

HISTORY
Some early accounts record the name of the province's main
island as Masbat. This may be based on masibát, a native
word for "abundant with lances,"perhaps in reference to the
island's well-armed inhabitants; or on masabat, Bikol for "to
meet along the way, alluding to the strategic position of
the town (now city) that bears the name, as well as

The people speak predominantly Visayan with a

HISTORY
As V
to how such name came to be, there were several versions
but the most plausible is the term “sosogon,” which means to
follow a trail, a river or a route continuously.

The theory goes that when the Spaniards reached this

unexplored portion of the Bicol peninsula in the latter part of
the 16th century, they reached a river and, upon seeing a
native, asked about the name of the place. Not knowing the
Castillan language, and thinking that they were asking for
the location of the settlement, the native answered:
“sosogon,” pointing to the direction up-river.

The strangers corrupted the word and wrote the name

“Sorsogon,” referring to the area, which was situated
between what are now the barangays of Capuy and Bulabog,
originally called Domanaog, now Binanuahan.

When the province was separated from Albay on October 17,

1894, the town was selected as its capital, and the province
