EARLY LIFE

- Born on April 26, 1917


- First born son of Tsuyee Pei and Lein Kwun
- Have one sister, Wei, and two brothers, Kwun and Chung
- In 1927, my father was made to be the manager of the
bank main’s office in Shanghai
- In 1930, my mother died of cancer
- The family retreat in Suzhou also known as the Garden
of the Lion Forest
EDUCATION

- University of Pennsylvania (1935)


- Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1940)
- Harvard’s Graduate School (1942)
> Studied under Walter Gropius
- Returned in Harvard in 1944 and completed Master in
Architecture in 1946
CAREER
- In 1945 to 1948, I was an instructor, then Assistant Professor of Harvard
Graduate School of Design
- In 1948, recruited by New York real estate magnate William Zeckendorf
- In 1955, formed partnership of I. M. Pei & Associates
- In 1960 to 1970, I was the member of the National Council on the
Humanities in Washington D.C.
- In 1967 10 1972, I was the member of the Urban Design Council of the City
of New York
- In 1970 to 1974, I was the member of the Corporation of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology, Cambridge
- In 1978 to 1980, I was the Chancellor for the American and Institute of Arts
and Letters in Washington D.C.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
- Using abstract form and materials such as stone, concrete, glass, and
steel, I am also considered a disciple of Walter Gropius
- I generally design sophisticated glass clad buildings loosely related to the
high-tech movement.

AWARDS
- AIA Gold Medal in 1979
- The first Praemium Imperiale for Architecture in 1989
- The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cooper-Hewitt
- National Design Museum in 2003
- The Pritzker Prize (1983)
