Motivation:

 1. Do you think that you will live or work outside
the Philippines someday? Why or why not?
 2. Why do so many Filipinos leave the Philippines?
What do you think are their strongest reasons for
leaving?
 3. Would you call migration a problem or a
solution? Explain your answer.
Pre-Reading:

 1. Interview one of your relatives who worked or
lived abroad.
 2. Create a scrapbook showing their experiences and
add either illustrations or photos that show what
they went through, the good things they experience,
and problems they encountered.
 3. Write your conclusion about your insights and
comments on their experiences.
Background Knowledge:

 1. Millions of Filipinos have left the Philippines in order to look
for greener pastures abroad.
 2. It is startling to discover that biggest segment of Asian-
Americans in the US is composed of Filipino-Americans.
 3. There are also Filipinos going as far as the Middle East and
Australia as health workers, teachers, entertainers, accountants,
engineers, mechanics, chefs, and domestic helpers.
 4. This trend will continue on into the future, unless there are
better jobs opportunities here in the country.
 5. This reality has been called the Philippine diaspora(the
movement, migration, or scattering of a people away from an
established or ancestral homeland) , and comes with societal
consequences.

something
 3. Squeaky- to make a short, high-pitched cry or noise
 4. Queues- lines of people who are waiting for something
 5. Bottlenecking- something that slows down a process

 7. Gargantuan- very large in size or amount
 8. Crypt-like- small space, like a chamber
 9. Homebound- going home
 10. Hypothermia- the temperature of the body is very low
