Introduction

Academic award is the annual prize given for those students

who exerts their effort and did their best to reach the target average in

order for them to be recognized and receive an award. Receiving an

award is more valuable than money because money is temporary and

award is a lifetime treasure that you need to maintain in order for you

to grow and it serves as an instrument to lead you to become

successful. The award of student foster strong relationships among

students, family, faculty and the community and creates a positive

school culture where students felt valued. A total of 50 respondents

were selected through Ramdom Sampling.

Methods

The method we used is Descriptive type of research .

Descriptive method is designed for the investigation to gather

information about present existing conditions. We used this to evaluate

the information needed in study by the sample of 50 respondents, we

made the questionaire as the main instrument . The grade 12 HUMSS

Student who had an academic award in their previous grade level

became the respondents of the research.

Results

After analyzing the data gathered by the used of a questionnaire

which was answered by the respondents , based on our findings of the

study that the following conclusion were formulated : Students who

received an academic award boost their self confidence and students

who received an academic award think positively and motivated to

study harder.

Discussions

Academic award helps the students to become motivated

performance and boost their self confident to show their skills and

ability, therefore it will serves as an inspiration to other students who

had not focus to their study, in order for them to be motivated and

receive an award too. Luisto (2014), awards have been designed to

formally recognize the outstanding performance and achievement of

learners in academics, leadership, and social responsibility, among

other aspects of students progress and development. Carolyn

Kelley(2015), she examines the ways in which school-based

performance award programs motivate students to modify or improve

self-confidence. Therefore it is important for the students who study

hard to be given an academic award for their being excellence in

academic performances for them to be motivated and having a self-

confidence to maintain their academic award .

Based on our study, students who received an academic award boost

their self-confidence , think posotively and motivated to study harder.

Luisto (2014), awards have been designed to formally recognize

the outstanding performance and achievement of learners in

academics, leadership, and social responsibility, among other aspects

of students progress and development. These awards are given to

encourage learners to strive for excellence and to become proactive

members of the school and community. In support of the holistic

development of filipino learners, it is important to veer away from

valuing only academic achievement based on high grades and move

toward valuing and celebrating a wide range of student achievements.

BARUA-YAP (2013) The State shall establish, maintain and

support a complete, adequate, and integrated system of education

relevant to the needs of the people, the country and society-at-

large.Likewise, it is hereby declared the policy of the State that every

graduate of basic education shall be an empowered individual who has

learned, through a program that is rooted on sound educational

principles and geared towards excellence, the foundations for learning

throughout life, the competence to engage in work and be productive,

the ability to coexist in fruitful harmony with local and global

communities, the capability to engage in autonomous, creative, and

critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to transform others

and one’s self

FOREIGN LITERATURE

Kelley(2015), she examines the ways in which school-based

performance award programs motivate students to modify or improve

self-confidence. Qualitative and survey data from programs motivate

students largely by creating conditions that increase intrinsic rewards

and focus students efforts, such as opportunities for professional

collaboration, feedback on the other student performance, a clear goal

focus, and alignment of organizational resources. Depending on the

specific design,it can also have negative consequences, such as

increased students stress.

Stewart (2014) ,Research has proven that recognition of one’s

efforts is more highly valued than money. Why should such a valuable

tool be limited to the workplace or to a narrow spectrum of high

achievers? Imagine the profound effects on an ordinary student who is

recognized for simply doing his or her best—an increased level of self-

confidence, a sense of accomplishment and respect among the peer

group. Such a feeling of accomplishment may carry forward throughout

their lives and ultimately improve our world as a whole. When it comes

to academics, it’s customary in our society to recognize the highest

achievers: the valedictorian, the class president, the honor student, or

the spelling bee champion. Unfortunately, the vast majority of hard-

working, well-behaved, industrious students are overlooked. It is

important to create recognition programs that honor all types of

students, especially those who might not normally receive

acknowledgment for their efforts.

LOCAL STUDIES

Gusano(2013), universities are looking for well-rounded students

and, nowadays, a good GPA isn¡¯t always enough to get into the

school you want. High school academic awards, whether for a specific

subject or just for all-around excellence in school, can be great ways to

prove that you¡¯re ready for the academic demands of college. You

should always strive to be your absolute best, so try to score a few

academic awards—after all, it can’t hurt to apply. But don’t stress too

much! Remember, colleges look for well-rounded students, and having

“Be trained to be the best, be linked to

success”

PAGE
no high school academic awards isn’t an admissions deal breaker. Just

make sure to pursue the things you love in high school. Commit

yourself to sports or theatre or clubs. Colleges just want to see that you

aren’t coasting through life.

Gregory (2012) , a good classroom condition is one of the

important aspects in classroom instruction. Many scholars had

mentioned that learning is achieved when the students are well

motivated. Similarly, different schools have different types of reward

and penalty policy, but almost all of them have one common goal

which is to motivate students to learn. Similarly, educators nowadays

are aware that giving penalties are counterproductive. An effective

rewards and penalty system should promote positive behavior and

regular attendance, which are essential foundations to a creative

learning and teaching environment.

FOREIGN STUDIES

Guyana (2016) An effective behavior modification system within

the classroom often includes rewards. Students are motivated to

achieve and conform to appropriate behaviors when either intrinsically

or extrinsically rewarded. Those students who prefer intrinsic

success”

PAGE
motivation enjoy praise, personally challenging projects and

accomplishing educational tasks just for the love of learning. An

extrinsic approach requires more tangible rewards such as pencils,

erasers, stickers and sometimes candy. The type of reward given to

students must be fair and consistent for all students but also must vary

for each task.Extending a reward to students helps to promote positive

and appropriate behavior among students in your class. Following

class rules, being kind to one another and keeping safety a priority are

just a few of the positive behaviors to be displayed in your classroom

through the gifting of rewards to the students. Through appropriate

student behavior, teachers are able to concentrate on lesson content

and interactive activities to indulge students in learning opposed to

focusing on classroom discipline.

SYNTHESIS

According to Younghors, it is important for the students to be awarded

to be recognized or to be awarded based on their accomplishments

and efforts in being excellence to their study. The giving of award in

students fosters strong relationship among students, families, faculty,

and the community and creates a positive school culture where

success”

PAGE
students feel valued. Based on Carolyn kelly, the giving of an award to

the students motivate students to modify or improve self-confidence. If

students will not giving a chance to be awarded, it can also have

negative consequences, such as increased students stress. It is

important for the students to be awarded, for them to maintain their

academic awards and to be motivated and being achievers it's serves

as an example for the other students who wants to be achievers too.

And according to Cody Stewart, recognition of one's effort or being

awarded is more highly valued than money. Imagine the profound

effects on an ordinary students who is recognized for simply doing his

or her best an increased level of self-confidence, a serve of

accomplishment and respect among the peer group. Such a feeling of

accomplishment may carry forward throughout their lives and

ultimately improve our world as a whole.

describe the nature of a situation as it exists at the time of the study

and to explore the causes of particular phenomena.

INSTRUMENT AND TECHNIQUES USED

Construction: For the purpose of gathering data, the researchers

made questionnaire as the main instrument. Various related studies

using questionnaire as a main source of data were reviewed to gain

insight relative to the formulation of appropriate questions. The

researchers prepared the questionnaire with the assistance of the

adviser, comments and suggestions of the adviser in the finalization of

the questionnaire were also taken into consideration.

Validation: For the purpose of determining the validity of the

questionnaire, the researchers submitted the draft to the adviser for

final comments and suggestion. Reasonable suggestions from the

group were incorporate d to improve the questionnaire.

SAMPLING PROCEDURE

A random sampling technique was used in this study. The Grade

12 HUMSS students who had an academic award in their previous

grade level became the respondents of the research. The computation

of the qualified respondents followed the computation based on the

formula developed.

STATISTICAL TREATMENT OF DATA

The following statistical tools were used to analyzed and interpret

the quantitative data. In order to understand the result of the survey

that will elucidate to the purpose of the study and statement of the

problem, the researchers use the following operations to interpret the

data.

A. FREQUENCY AND PERCENTAGE

Frequency is the total number of respondents that favored the

choices or item over other given items in a questionnaire. Percentage

was used for the computation of the items in a group that is favorable

to the respondents.

It was used to describe the respondents profile in terms of their

demographic profile and what sources of information did they become

aware in The Impact of giving an academic award to the academic

performances of Grade 12 HUMSS students in BESTLINK COLLEGE
