• Early migration was recorded even during the Spanish time, hacienderos brought
sakada’s from nearby towns of Bacolod and Iloilo to work as sugarfarm workers
who also render service in the “POLO” or force labor of the Spaniards. These
cycle continues even after the birth of the new republic, the encomienderos and
the peninsulares inherited the vast land from the spanish colonizer.
• Due to lack of opportunity, people began to migrate to other Cities (Manila, Cebu
and Dumaguete) in the late 1970’s and the early part of the 1980’s
• Significant change are felt in Negros and Iloilo after the people’s power
particularly in the creation of National Sugar Regulatory Board. Price of sugar was
being regulated, export being strengthen. Price of sugar in the international
market began to stable During the helm of then DOT Sec. Dick Gordon, festival
was held in Kalibo, Iloilo, Bacolod and Cebu and being promoted as part of the
WOW Philippines Campaign.
• Development and economic program was laid down in Bacolod, Iloilo and cebu
creating Metro Bacolod, Metro Iloilo and Metro Cebu as well as the full
promotion and bloom of tourism industry in Boracay, Bacolod and Iloilo.
Real Estate Industry
• Small landlords, those who owns 10 hectares below are selling their
land during the crisis
• Prior to the growth of Real Industry, affluent families in Bacolod and
Iloilo invest heavily in automobile and/or setting up business in
Manila.
