Abstract

Drilling is a important part of world of petroleum engineering. With the new era
and new technologies, drilling operations in petroleum industries keep growing
and developing. If the conventional drilling is vertical drilling, then with new
technologies, we can drill a well with horizontal drilling and directional drilling
technique. With this technique, we can drill a well in effective ways and gain a
better result.

 DirectionalDrilling is the process of directing
the wellbore along some trajectory to a
predetermined target
Reasons
Deflection Tools For
Directional Drilling
Deflection Tools

In directional drilling, we use some deflection tools,

such as :
 Whipstock
 Jetting Bits
 Positive Displacement Mud Motors (PDM Motors)
 Turbin
Whipstock

 The first deflection tools

 Function : To change and deviate the wellbore
trajectory

 Used in Sidetrack drilling

Jetting Bits

 Deviate the wellbore trajectory with drilling fluid hydraulic energy

 Rarely used because of the slow / small ROP (Rate of Penetration) and it’s
only effective on hard formation.
PDM Motors

 PDM motors is steerable motor assemblies

 PDM motor based on Moineau’s law
 His theory said that :
“A helical rotor with one or more lobes will rotate eccentrically when the stator
contains one or more lobes than the rotor. The flow of the fluid transmits power
allowing the assembly to rotate and turn the bit.”
 Introduced at late 1960’s
Turbine

 Designed for high speed and low torque.

 Compatible with diamond bit / PDC bit
 Weakness :
 Not flexible and efficient
 Expensive
Conclusion
Conclusion

 Directional Drilling is one of some methods in drilling engineering.

 In directional drilling we can make a deviation for our wellbore
 There are some reasons:
 Payzone location
 Structure
 etc
 Directional Drilling use deflection tools, such as whipstock, PDM motor,
turbine, jetting bits, etc.
