Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
The measurement system consists of the
person measuring it and the instrument.
In some cases the person measuring is
also the instrument.

Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
Example
An athlete is being clocked for a 100 meters sprint, using a stop watch. 20 different
readings are taken at different time intervals (let us also make a video recording of
each of the sprints).

What does the measurement system here consist of?

The stop watch and

ANSWER
The person who is
reading the stop watch
Measurement System Analysis (MSA)

Let us assume the first sprint was clocked at 11.00 seconds.

What are the different possibilities?

1. The athlete actually took 11.00 seconds to cover the 100

meters.
2. The athlete took 10.5 Seconds, the person started the stop
watch 0.5 seconds late.
3. The athlete took 11.5 seconds, but was clocked at 11.00
seconds because of a faulty stop watch.
Data Collection
Why Data Collection Plan?
• Ensures Data collection is done effectively
• Makes Data collection systematic instead of
random and haphazard.
• Addresses questions like
– Who will collect the data ?

– How many variables?

– What type of data: Discrete or Continuous?

– How many data points?

– Any specific time of the day to be collected?

– Any specific process / instrument to be used?

What Data Should be collected ?

Data Collection focuses on the project Y.

Considers potential Xs that have been filtered from the process Map. This is done
assuming that its costly and time consuming to collect data on Xs. If data can be
collected on all Xs without much effort, then we should go ahead and collect data on
all measurable Xs

A format for Data Collection ensures that data is collected on input variables (Xs)
that have been identified during Brainstorming
