Definitions
Signals, sensors, signal conditioning.
 An increasing need to record and preserve these phenomena and
analyze them at a later time forced engineers to develop data
recorders and data acquisition systems  DAQ/DAS
 How about the basic DAQ/DAS?

Data acquisition.
DAQ/DAS is the process of sampling signals that measure real world
physical conditions and converting the resulting samples into digital
numeric values that can be manipulated by a computer.

Definitions
Data acquisition (DAQ) is the process of measuring an electrical or
physical phenomenon such as voltage, current, temperature,
pressure, or sound with a computer.

A DAQ system consists of sensors, DAQ measurement hardware,

and a computer with programmable software.

Compared to traditional measurement systems, PC-based DAQ

systems exploit the processing power, productivity, display, and
connectivity capabilities of industry-standard computers providing a
more powerful, flexible, and cost effective measurement solution.

Components
The components of a DAQ/DAS
• Sensors that convert physical parameters to electrical signals.
• Signal conditioning circuitry to convert sensor signals into a form
that can be converted to digital values.
• ADC (sometime DAC, which convert conditioned sensor signals
to digital values.

DAQ/DAS Types
The types of a DAQ/DAS
The DAQ/DAS can be classified into the following two types.
1. Analog Data Acquisition Systems
2. Digital Data Acquisition Systems

DAQ/DAS Types
The Analog Data Acquisition Systems
The data acquisition systems, which can be operated with analog
signals are known as analog data acquisition systems, including:
+ Transducer − It converts physical quantities into electrical signals.
+ Signal conditioner − It performs the functions like amplification and
selection of desired portion of the signal.
+ Display devices − It displays the input signals for monitoring
purpose.
+ Graphic recording instruments − These can be used to make the
record of input data permanently.
+ Magnetic tape instrumentation − It is used for acquiring, storing &
reproducing of input data.

DAQ/DAS Types
The Analog Data Acquisition Systems
 The higher the number of bits of an analog to digital converter,
the greater the number of discrete levels that can be used for
representing an analog signal, and the greater the resolution of the
analog to the digital converter.

The Digital Data Acquisition Systems
The data acquisition systems, which can be operated with digital
signals are known as digital data acquisition systems.
 They use digital components for storing or displaying the
information.
Mainly, the following operations take place in digital data acquisition.
+ Acquisition of analog signals
+ Conversion of analog signals into digital signals or digital data
+ Processing of digital signals or digital data

Data logger
A data logger (Data recorder) is an electronic devices that record
data over time or in relation to location either with a built in or via
external instruments and sensors
Typical application of data logger:
• Road traffic counting
• Tank level monitoring
• Measuring humidity or temperature
• Measuring soil moisture level
• Monitoring the environment
