Partial Discharge Measurement
Recently we observed abnormal sound from B-Phase VT compartment of 400kV Bus-B. After performing
all test of SF6 gas such as pressure test, Dew point test , Percentage test , PD measurement and Acidity
test . Both PD and Acidity (Acidity>200 ppm) observed. We dismantled the earth switch of G2
compartment of faulty Busbar-2,B-VT for inspection of isolator housing and lot of SO2
powder(>200ppm) was seen inside the compartment and carbonization was found on bus bar, corona
shield and rotuile section. So this was need to install such type of upgraded PDM System. Up Graded
system of Partial Discharge Measurement was already installed in our another Power House named
Karcham-Wangtoo (1091 MW), so it was very helpful to know about this system.

Spectrum Analyzer
Earlier we were using Spectrum Analyzer for Partial Discharge Measurement. It provide only Graphical
Data. If we want to analyze PD particular compartment, we have to go at that location with spectrum
analyzer and this is very time consuming & tiring process.
PD Monitoring System

1. It is online PD monitoring system.

2. Having detected a PD and identified the type of defect
from the pattern displayed on the PD monitor.
3. Its location in the GIS can be found very easily.
4. Having very large storage capacity (=1TB)
Typical Signal Types
Corona PD generated by busbar corona discharge
Floating Electrode PD generated by floating component
Particle PD generated by a free particle
Void PD generated by voids in insulation
Radar Noise generated by aircraft radar
Lights Noise generated starters in fluorescent lighting
Mobile Noise generated by mobile (cell) telephones
Noise generated by gas pumps and other motor
Motor Noise driven equipment

All above typical signal Patterns (Graphical patterns) provided us in a library to analyze the type of fault.

Up gradation of SCADA from Unix to Window7 Ultimate
1. LSX Prokon based system hardware was not supported.
2. LSX Prokon based system Archive storage capacity was less.
3. LSX Prokon based system resolution was less.
4. Win CC based system is very helpful in trouble shooting because of more history data availability
of more storage capacity.
5. Win CC based system is more user friendly.
6. In LSX Prokon based system Local Operator Station and Control Room Operator Station were on
different application software.
a. Local Operator Station was on Win CC V5.0 based.
b. Control Room Operator Station was on Unix based.

LSX Prokon Based System:

1. Operating System was Unix based.

2. Data Storage and analyzing of storage history was more typical:

a. Connect the Engineering Station.
b. Retrieve data in it's language(Unix).
c. If you want to see history, first upload data in the system and you can check back-up record.
d. Storage Capacity is very small(=32 GB).

3. Storage Capacity was very small, so we need to store data frequently (after 15 days).
Win CC Based System:
1. Operating System is Windows based.

2. Application Software is Win CC V7.0

3. More user friendly.

4. Graph and Data access is on single click.

5. Many online graph of different parameters are available on single page.

6. In Win CC based system Local Operator Station and Control Room Operator Station were on

Same application software (Win CC).

7. Online hourly report is available.

8. Storage Capacity is very large(=1 TB Redundant).

9. Data Storage is very simple just Copy and Paste and you can analyze easily.

We also upgrade master clock because of Malfunctioning and synchronized with all PLC and
Feeder Protection Relay for getting real time data. We are also using Win CC up grade version in
system, Before we were using Winn CC V5.0 and now using Win CC V7.0
Up gradation of Mimic board to Video wall
Mimic board was a old system and its parts (like: 7 segment display) was out of market. Parts are available
only order basis and all are costly .so there was need to upgrade this system.
Mimic Board:
It was LED based (7 segment display) board which gives only Electrical Over view and few signals.
Video Wall (LVS)
It is projector based video screens and combination of six screens.
1. We can monitor not only individual all pages but also six screen at a time.
2. We can also control all the six pages at a time.
3. There is many different pages contains all three units, electrical and mechanical parameters on a single screen.
LT System Overhauling
FRD Mechanism pin (attached with Nylon roller) was found broken, so Y-Phase of that breaker was not closing and it was
a long time for frequent operation of LT breakers so it was necessity to check the Main contacts, Arcing contact and
Mechanism of all LT System.

ACB OFF POSITION:

1. Cleaning of ACB
2. Freeness of Breaker Handle
3. Inspection of Main Isolating Contacts
4. Inspection of Earthing Isolation
5. Arcing contact gap 0.8 to 1.0 mm
6. Condition of Main & Arching Contacts
7. Gap between Trip latch & roller
8. Gap between derlin latch & release sticker
9. Trip Lock Status
10. Inspect Nylon rollers on Poles
11. Circlips in position
12. Condition of arc chutes
13. Greasing of ACB mechanism
14. Gap between close PB & Closing Bracket
15. Inspection Of Stopper position &check nut tightness
16. Tripping and Closing coil status
17. Spring charging Motor Status
18. FRD Mechanism Status
ACB IN ON POSITION:

1. Under Voltage Release Status

2. Shunt Release Status
3. Alignment of ON-OFF Indication
4. Inspection of Safety Shutter
5. Inspection of Cradle terminals
6. O/L & Short Circuit Protection

ACB CRADLE:
1. Freeness
2. Cleaning
3. Greasing
4. Limit Switch Status

During Overhauling above points of LT System are checked and some parts
of LT breakers are Under consideration:
1.
Gap adjustment between arching contacts.
2. Condition of Arching Contacts Fixed and Moving.
3. All 3 Pole assembly.
4. Fixing damaged and missing hardware.
Overhauling of GIS
1. All the leakages from the pilot blocks and other points such as ermeto couplings of the pump, unions ,
pipes, of HP and LP systems, have been attended by using new unions, "O" rings and pipes.

2. Leaking interconnecting low pressure copper pipes between hydraulic cabinets were also changed
filter for hydraulic oil has been changed with the spares supplied.

3. All operational and commissioning checks of all breakers were found to be satisfactory and are well
with the criteria limits.

Inspection of Operating Mechanism of Circuit Breaker

1. Breakers Re-Inflation Durations & Oil Consumptions:

Following works are also carried our during over hauling:

1. Inspection of SF6 gas leakage from feeder-1 GIB- R phase (G6 compartment) was checked and
the tightness of the bolts of the joints was checked for its requisite torque valves.
2. The ram of breaker of B-phase of unit-1 was changed with the new RAM. Its performance is
under observation, the above RAM has been changed to check the fitting and performance of
new RAM which has been supplied as spare
3. 400 liters of Hydraulic oil was used for replacing the existing oil from the hydraulic mechanism
of the breakers.
Following works were carried out on units and feeder breakers for attending the oil
oozing observed by the site personal and reported:

1. Hydraulic pressure of breaker was reduced to 0 bar.

2. The oozing ermeto coupling of pilot block was further tightened by 1/4 to 1/2 turn.

3. After attending the oozing nominal pressure was maintained and checked for the
leakages.

4. 05 operations of each breakers were carried out in order to check for the further
leakage.
5. No oozing has been observed.

6. Further the breakers are kept under observation by site personnel.
