DEFINITION
A letter is a written message from one party to another
containing information. Letters are one of the oldest modes
of communication used by humankind. In the contemporary
society, there are two types of letters: formal letters and
informal letters.

MAIN DIFFERENCE
Main Difference: The main difference between a formal
letter and an informal letter is their purpose: a formal
letter is written for professional (official and business)
communication while the informal letter is used for
personal communication.

FORMAL LETTER
DEFINITION
A formal letter is a letter that is written in the formal
languange with a specific format for business or official
purpose. In simple terms, this is a letter written for
professional communication. This is also sometimes referred to
as a business letter. A formal letter could be a letter of
enquiry, a letter of request, or a letter of complaint.

LANGUANGE FEATURES
•Don’t use abbreviations

For example, do not write info for


information; do not write ads for
advertisement.
•Avoid contraction

Avoid using informal degree

DEFINITION
An Informal Letter is a letter that is usually written to a
close friend or an acquaintance. It is also known as a
personal letter and this type of letter does not have 'hard'
and 'fast' rules on the format of writing as opposed to a
formal letter, although there is a conventional way of
writing it.
HOW TO WRITE AN INFORMAL LETTER

• Language: Informal language, you can use slang


and colloquial terms

• Tone: Conversational tone, it is said that an


informal letter should sound like a real
conversation

• Salutations: Most common salutation is “Dear”,


but you can use words like “Hi”, “Hey” if
appropriate. Do not use titles
STRUCTURE

1. Place and Date (the sender adrress) : It is the month, day,


yearand place that the letter is written on.

2. Greeting: Some times we call it “salutation”. It is the introductory


phrase. It can be a phrase like:
Dear Tono, Dear My friend, Dear My Brother, etc

3. Body: All kinds of letter formal or informal have the letter body. This
is the complete text of the letter or the subject matter content.

4. Closing: It is the farewell phrase. That is a word that precedes the


signature and is followed by a comma. The phrases can be like; Yours
truly, Sincerely, Respectfully yours, Regards, etc.

5. Signature:This the place where you write your name and signature.
