SPANISH SETTLEMENT

IN THE PHILIPPINES
CEBU SETTLEMENT
• Feb 13 1565, Miguel lopez de legazpi landed in cebu
island

• After a short struggle with the natives, he proceeded


to Leyte, then to Camiguin and to Bohol
• There Legazpi made a blood compact
with Datu Sikatuna as sign of friendship

• Legaspi was able to obtain spices and


gold in Bohol due to his friendship with
Sikatuna.
• On April 27, 1565 Legaspi returned to
cebu
• Destroyed the town of Raja Tupas
• Establish a first settlement in Philippines
*On orders of the king Philip II, 2.100 men
arrived from Mexico
*They built the “The Fort of Fuerza de San
perdo”
PANAY SETTLEMENT

• Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, leader of the Spanish


expedition to the Philippines he transferred his
stronghold to Panay in the latter part of 1569
• Shortage of food and the growing restlessness of his men

• continuous harassment of his settlement by the Portuguese

• In 1569 Legaspi upon learning of the abundance of food
and needed provisions in panay decide to move to the
island
• After exploring the banks of Panay River, he founded the
Second settlement in the philippines
INITIAL SPANISH CONQUEST
Legaspi sent small expeditions to explore the neighboring
island of Visayas

In 1570 Juan de Salcedo


(Legaspi grandson) was sent to
Mindoro to punish Muslim Pirates
FIRST CONQUEST OF MANILA
• Upon his return to Panay, Salcedo
reported to his grandfather about the
prospertity of Manila, a Muslim Kingdom
ruled by Rajah sulayman.
