How can you make a plural of something you don't
know? A collective noun...:
Is a word that is singular, but carries
with it the idea of plural.

ATTENTION THERE PORTUGUESE SPEAKERS... In English is no

mistake to use the verbs in the plural with collective nouns
(within the rules, of course):
We use the verb in the singular if the idea is of group:

We use the verb in the plural when we think of the individuals

acting within the whole (not very often):
A little harder: Compound nouns...
simplifying, are words, particularly adjectives and nouns, that are combined
into compound structures. These structures can be in 3 forms:

CLOSED : Over time, the words became one. Ex.: firefly, secondhand
HYPHENATED: Ex.: daughter-in-law, six-pack
OPEN: Ex.: post office, full moon

Pluralizing...:

CLOSED : Generally, follow the “normal” rules. Ex.: fireflies

HYPHENATED: The “s” is attached to what is actually in the plural. This also
happens in the OPEN form. Ex.: daughters-in-law, full moons.

The terror of English speakers is the plural with apostrophes. Is actually

really simple,because there is only 1 major situation to use it: When
pluralizing a word to refer to itself ( such as plural of alphabetical letters ):

I got 10 A's in my report card.

Such a lie!

OBS.: Please, don't use apostrophes to say “the 1980s” or to brag about your numerous PhDs
from Harvard.
