The type 1 conditional refers to a possible condition and


its probable result
These sentences are based on facts, and they are used to make
statements about the real world, and about particular situations
In type 1 conditional sentences, the time is
the present or future and the situation is
real.
PATTERN
‘If’ at the beginning of sentence : ‘If’ at the middle of sentence :

If + simple present, S + will+ V1 S + will+ V1+ if + S + simple present

Example : Example :
If i have free time, I will go I’ll go home if the bell rings
swimming.
CONDITIONAL TYPE 2
FUNCTION
The type 2 conditional refer to an unlikely or
hypothetical condition and its probable result.

These sentences are not bassed on the actual


situation.

In type 2 conditional sentences, the time is now


or any time and the situation is hypothetical.
PATTERN
‘If’ at the beginning of sentence : ‘If’ at the middle of sentence :

If + simple past, S + would/could S + would/could/might + Past future


/might + past future tense tense + if + S + past tense

Example : Example :

FUNCTION
The type 3 conditional refers to an impossible condition in the
past and its probable result in the past.

These sentences are truly hypothetical and unreal, because it


is now too late for the condition or its result to exist

There is always some implication of regret

The reality is the opposite of, or contrary to,


what the sentence expresses

In type 3 conditional sentences, the time is the past and


the situation is hypothetical
IMAGINATIVE CONDITIONAL SENTENCES
PAST TIME

Conditional sentences with ‘’IF” can be used to describe wishes


and dreams about past situations oe events that did not take
place. The verb in the “IF” clause is “had +past participle,and the
verb in the result clause is usually “would,might,could+have+a past
participle”.

Eg :
 If I had chosen to study in Hawai, I could have gone swimming every day
 If I had visited New York on my last trip, I would have seen the Statue of
Liberty.
PATTERN
(+) If you had remembered to invite me, I
would have attended your party
(Jika kamu ingat untuk mengundang saya,
‘If’ at the beginning of sentence : saya akan hadir di pestamu)

(-) If the waitress had been careful, she

participle + if + past perfect ia menjawab pertanyaan terakhir dengan
benar)
(-) I would have not eaten that cake if I
had known that it is stale
(Saya tidak akan memakan kue itu jika saya
mengetahui bahwa kue itu basi)
(?) Would you have sent me to school if I
had asked you to?
(Akankah kamu mengantarku ke sekolah jika
saya menyuruhmu)
