The environmental group ranked the Philippines as the
“third-worst polluter into the world’s oceans” after
China and Indonesia.
More than 54,200 pieces of plastic waste were
recovered from the bay in total, including some 9,000 from Nestle products the most frequently-seen brand, according to a tally kept by the group. In the Philippines, a country of 103 million people with high levels of poverty, products sold in single-use sachets include instant coffee, shampoo, cooking oil, food seasoning and toothpaste.
Greenpeace said the Philippines contributed 1.88 million tons of
“mismanaged plastic waste” each year, with Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia also on its list of the world’s biggest ocean plastic polluters. HISTORY OF ECOBRICKS The GEA Alliance finds its roots in the Northern Philippines. In 2012, Russell Maier stumbled on ecobriking in the town of Sabangan, Mt. Province as a way to transform his home plastic. With the help of Irene Bakisan and Pi VIllaraza they began to refine the ecobricking methodology and pedagogy. Together they developed the Vision Ecobrick Guide as a way to disseminate Ecobricks throughout the school system. The open source guide book was instrumental in assisting the spread of ecobricks to thousands of schools. Best Solution: ECOBRICKS - your simple solution for plastic. An Ecobrick is a plastic bottle packed tight with used clean and dry plastics to create a building block that can be used over and over again. OBJECTIVES Given the purpose of ecobricks to eradicate, if not to reduce plastic pollution in the bodies of water, this initiative will likewise: Promote discipline and appreciation of the value of Mother Nature and the only planet we live in. Create a positive impact to the environment by reducing plastic waste, resulting to a cleaner and healthier community. Teach and develop skills and creativity in building structures out of ecobricks. Build more structures to inspire others, hence, activity is emulated. Foster widespread community participation in programs designed to preserve the environment.
