Introduction
 Both electric utilities and end users of electric power are
becoming increasingly concerned about the quality of electric
power.
 The term power quality has become one of the most prolific
buzzwords in the power industry since the late 1980s.
 The Power Quality Gained Increased Impotance In Recent
Years Due To Following Reasons :-
• Increasing use of micro-processor based devices.
• The increasing emphasis on overall power system efficiency
has resulted in continued growth in the application of devices
such as high-efficiency.
Terms And Definitions Of Power
Quality As Per IEEE Std. 1159
 Power Quality is defined as” any problem manifested in
voltage, current or frequency deviations that results in the
failure or misoperation of end users equipment.
 Technically, in engineering terms, power is the rate of energy
delivery and is proportional to the product of the voltage and
current.
 AC power systems are designed to operate at a sinusoidal
voltage of a given frequency [typically 50 or 60 hertz (Hz)]
and magnitude
 Currents from lightning strokes passing through the power
system cause high-impulse voltages that frequently flash over
insulation and lead to other phenomena, such as short circuits
Significance And Importance Of
Power Quality:
The ultimate reason that we are interested in
power quality is economic value.
 There are economic impacts on utilities, their
customers, and suppliers of load equipment.
This usually means electronically controlled,
energy-efficient equipment that is often much
more sensitive to deviations in the supply
voltage than were its electromechanical
predecessors.
Symptoms Of Poor Power Quality
A] Electricity bill:
• High demand charges
• Power Factor penalties
B] Office Problems:
• Dropped telephone calls
• Equipment running hot
C] HVAC Problems:
• Motor Failure
• Component Failure
POWER Quality Problem
 Interruption:

An intrruption occures when the supply voltage or load

current decrase to less than 0.1 pu for a period of time not
exceeding 1 min. Interruptions can be the result of power
system faults, equipment failures, and control malfunctions.
 Swells :
As well is defined as an increase to between 1.1 and 1.8 in
rms voltage or current at the power frequency for durations
from 0.5 cycle to 1 min.
 Transients :
Fast rise time high voltage pulse superimposed on the
supply voltage Can be causes by a no. of factor including
the residual effect of lighting strikes, power factor correction
, capacitor switching.
Sags (dips) :
A sag is a decrease to between 0.1 and 0.9 pu in
rms voltage or current at the power frequency for
durations from 0.5 cycle to 1 min.

Flicker
The term flicker is derived from the impact of
the voltage fluctuation on lamps such that they
are perceived to flicker by the human eye
