CARBURETTOR
It is device used for atomizing and vapourizing the fuel and mixing it with air in
varying proportions to suit for changing the operating conditions of engine.

The process of breaking up and mixing the fuel with the air is called
carburetion.
Functions of carburetor:

1. It atomizes and vapourizes the fuel.

2. It prepare a homogeneous mixture of petrol and air in correct

proportions.

3. It measures and supply the proper quantity and proportions of air

and fuel under all conditions of engine operations such as
temperature, speed and load.

4. It maintains small reserve of petrol in the float chamber at a

constant head.
Main parts of carburettor:
1. Venturi tube
2. Float chamber
3. Choke
4. Throttle
5. Metering system
6. Idling system
7. Compensating devices
WORKING:

During suction stroke a vaccum is created inside the engine

cylinder. It causes the pressure difference between the cylinder and
outside the carburetor. Due to this atmospheric air is enters the
carburetor.

The air flows through the venturi. The venturi increases the
velocity of air and reduces the pressure.

It produces the partial vaccum at the tip of the fuel nozzle.

Because of this vaccum the fuel comes out from the nozzle in the form
of a fine spray.

These fine fuel particles mix with air to form air-fuel mixture.
Thus it gives a homogeneous mixture of air-fuel to the engine.
AIR-FUEL MIXTURE:

1. Chemically correct mixture 16:1

2. Rich mixture 9:1

3. Lean mixture 19:1

Starting, idling, high load, high speed needs RICH MIXUTRE

Cruising, normal load operation needs LEAN MIXTURE

COMPLETE CARBURETTOR
COMPLETE CARBURETTOR:

The simple carburettor is found useful only at a particular load and

speed conditions.

But in actual practice the engine has to run at different speeds and
load conditions.

For this additional systems used in the carburetor are:

1. Starting system
2. Idling system
3. Acceleration pump system
4. Main metering system
5. Economizer system
6. Altitude influence system
7. Weather influence system.
STARTING SYSTEM

1. Choke
2. Ticklers
3. Adjustable area jet
4. Auxiliary port system

• Restricted air bleed compensating
• Compensating system
• Multiple jet system
