INTONATION

Intonation is the rising and falling of the voice during speech

There are three intonation patterns:

a. Rising intonation
It is used in questions answerable by “yes” or “no” and in incomplete questions and
statements.

Example: Are you coming tonight?

Do you like the phillipines?
Do you favor the charter change?
from whom?
Live where?
b. Falling intonation
It is used in questions starting whith who, what, when, where, why and
how. It is used in complete and affirmative sentences.

Example: Where is Roxanne?

How did you get the answer?

I’m looking for you.

It was a night to remember.

The onion soup in paris is worth

dying for.
c. Circumflex intonation
It is used when contrasting two things or opposing ideas. It is used in a series of items,
with the last item using a falling intonation

Example: Is it good, or bad?

Is it sweet, or sour?

Is the test easy, or difficult?

Is the texture rough, or smooth?
