SLEEP

THEORIES
GROUP 1
ADAPTIVE THEORY
ADAPTIVE THEORY

Sleep is a product of
evolution (Webb , 1992)
To avoid being present
during their predator’s
hunting hours,Animals
and Humans evolved
different sleeping
patterns.
ADAPTIVE
THEORY:EXAMPLE
FOR EXAMPLE:

• Lions sleep 15 hours a day and

while they sleep while its prey
such as gazelles sleep 4 hours in
a day usually in short naps.
• The difference in sleep shows that
stronger animals sleep a lot
because they don’t have to worry
of being killed unlike weaker
animals that is usually being
preyed upon on.
RESTORATIVE THEORY
RESTORATIVE THEORY
Sleep is necessary to the physical
health of the body to replenish
used up chemicals and repair
damages. (Adam,1980;Moldofsky,
1995)
Brains plasticity is enhanced by
sleep.Evidences also proves that
most repair occurs during the
deepest stage of sleep. (Saper et
al., 2001)
RESTORATIVE THEORY:
EXAMPLE
REPAIRING A WOUND

The platelets (little children

working) created these nets called
fibrin that connects everything like
the red blood cells(the red people)
so that the wound would heal in
time and become a scab.
WHICH THEORY IS
CORRECT?
Both theories are correct since the
1st theory (Adaptive theory) states
when we sleep and the 2nd theory
(Restorative theory) states why we
need to sleep.
