This HIV patient presented with labial and gingival Kaposi’s sarcoma secondary to his AIDS infection which included
the maxilla. In approximately 7.5-10 percent of AIDS patients display signs of oral Kaposi’s sarcoma, and can range in
appearance from a small asymptomatic growths that are flat purple-red in color, to larger nodular growths.

This HIV-positive patient was exhibiting a chronic mucocutaneous herpes lesion for one month in duration. Herpes
simplex virus type1 usually is the cause for oral lesions sometimes referred to as “cold sores”, “fever blisters” or more
technically known as “recurrent herpes labialis”.
