Uses of Ammonia
• Manufacture fertiliser (agriculture sector)
• Manufacture synthetic fibre (nylon)
• Manufacture explosive (trinitrotoluene / TNT)
• Manufacture nitric acid,HNO3
• Prevents the coagulation of latex
• Dyes
• Cleaning agents (washing powder and detergent)
Properties of Ammonia

• Alkaline
• Colorless gas with pungent smell
• Less dense than air
• Burns in oxygen but not in air
• Very soluble in water
Manufacturing process of Ammonia

• Through Haber process

• Nitrogen gas + Hydrogen gas at a ratio of 1:3
• Compressed to a high pressure of 200 atmosphere at a temperature
of 450 C
• N2(g) + 3H2(g) ⇌ 2NH3(g)
Preparation of Ammonia Fertiliser
Ammonia and sulphuric acid
• 2NH3+ H2SO4 ➡️ (NH4)2SO4 (Ammonium sulphate)

Ammonia and nitric acid

• NH3 + HNO3 ➡️ NH4NO3 (Ammonium nitrate)

Ammonia and phosphoric acid

• 3NH + H3PO4 ➡️ (NH4)3PO4 (Ammonium phosphate)
