FLIGHT CONTROLS

 Introduction

 The flight controls act upon the main & tail rotor
control over the roll, pitch & heading

 Altitude & speed of the helicopter are ensured by

flight control

FLIGHT CONTROLS 3
FLIGHT CONTROLS

 Main Rotor Controls

 Cyclic pitch stick is the one upon which the pilot act.

FLIGHT CONTROLS 4
FLIGHT CONTROLS

 Control Surface
 The elements which control the flight i.e. Blades

FLIGHT CONTROLS 5
FLIGHT CONTROLS

 Intermediate Components

 Levers

 Bell cranks

 Relays

FLIGHT CONTROLS 6
FLIGHT CONTROLS

 Connecting Components
 These are the rods which links
the controls, the intermediate
components & the control surface

 The cyclic pitch stick has a

neutral position & collective pitch
stick has low position

FLIGHT CONTROLS 7
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL

 Cyclic Pitch Controls

 Purpose

• It controls the roll, pitch & altitude of the aircraft by

manipulation of the main rotor disc

FLIGHT CONTROLS 8
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL

 Cyclic Pitch Control

 Description
• By Moving of cyclic control stick swash plat move through
different control rods

• Swash plate change the angle of the blades through pitch

change rods

FLIGHT CONTROLS 9
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control
 Description
• The swash plate assembly is actuated by 3 control tubes

• Control tubes are connected to the non rotary star

Non rotary star

FLIGHT CONTROLS 10
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control
 Description

• Control tubes located in front of MGB is for fore & aft control

• Control tubes laterally fitted use for laterally control

Front rod

FLIGHT CONTROLS 11
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control
 Description
• Sensitivity can be adjusted by adjusting the friction of steel cup on
a friction ball secured to the floor

FLIGHT CONTROLS 12
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control Movement

 Displacement of the cyclic pitch stick along the

longitudinal axis of the A/C (fore & aft) brings on inclination
about the “YY” axes

 Displacement of the cyclic pitch along the lateral axis of

the A/C ( LT & RT) brings an inclination about the” XX” axis

FLIGHT CONTROLS 13
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL

 Cyclic Stick Movement ( fore & aft )

 When the stick is moved
forward and back the swash y
plate moves about the “Y Y”
axis
 The tilt angle of the plate y
being proportional to the degree
of movement of the stick

 Displacement of the cyclic

pitch stick to the rear produces
the opposite effect

FLIGHT CONTROLS 14
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Stick Movement ( LT & RT)
 Moving the stick from RT x
to LT causes the swash plate
to tilt to the left about “XX” axis
and vice versa x
 This movement the swash
plate causes a cyclic variation
in the angle of attack of the
rotor blade

 The rotor tilt to the left the

A/C also moves to the left

FLIGHT CONTROLS 15
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL

 Cyclic Pitch Control Component

 Swash plate assembly
• It is mounted on the main rotor drive shaft

FLIGHT CONTROLS 16
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control Component
 Purpose
• Provides tilting movement by moving the cyclic & collective stick

• Changes the angle of all three blade separately through cyclic stick

FLIGHT CONTROLS 17
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control Component
 Swash plate assembly
• The swash plate assembly consist of two star
• The non rotating lower star
• The rotating star at top

Non rotating star

FLIGHT CONTROLS 18
CYCLIC PITCH CONTROL
 Cyclic Pitch Control Component
 Pitch change rod
• Its one end is connected to the rotary star & other is connected
to sleeve

• It change the angle of all the three blades accordingly by

moving the cyclic stick & collective pitch lever

FLIGHT CONTROLS 19
COLLECTIVE PITCH CONTROL

 Collective Pitch Controls Qty 02

 Location
• Each is located on left side of the pilot & co-pilot seat

FLIGHT CONTROLS 20
COLLECTIVE PITCH CONTROL

 Collective Pitch Controls

 Purpose
• It controls the altitude & speed of the aircraft by regulating of the
power supply to the main rotor

FLIGHT CONTROLS 21
COLLECTIVE PITCH CONTROL

 Collective Pitch Controls

 Function
• Movement of the collective pitch control lever gives an equal
displacement of the three swash plate control rods which
undergo displacement parallel to the plate causing no change in
cyclic variation which stays the same

FLIGHT CONTROLS 22
COLLECTIVE PITCH CONTROL

 Collective Pitch Controls

 Function
• Pulling up the collective pitch control
lever causes the swash plate to move
upward
•The incidence of all three blade
increase by the same amount
•The a/c gains altitude or forward speed

• Pushing down the collective pitch

control lever produces reverse effect
