Magnetic Field

ACTIVITY 7:
MAGNETIC FIELD
SIMULATION
1
OBJECTIVE
• Predict the magneticS field directions and
patterns in different locations around the
earth, a bar magnet and combinations of
magnets.
• Relate magnetic field strength to distance
quantitatively and qualitatively.
2
Magnetic field Field
Magnetic field, a vector field in the
neighborhood of a magnet, electric
current, or changing electric field, in
which magnetic forces are observable.

Magnetic Forces
Magnetic force
• Magnetic force, attraction or repulsion
that arises between electrically
charged particles because of their
motion.
• It is the basic force responsible for such
effects as the action of electric
motors and the attraction of 6
Magnetic forms
• Diamagnetism
• Paramagnetism
• Ferromagnetism
• Antiferromagnetism
• Ferrimagnetism
7
8

Diamagnetism
• Diamagnetic materials create
an induced magnetic field in a
direction opposite to an
externally applied magnetic
field.
• They are repelled by the
applied magnetic field.
• The permanent dipoles are
absent in diagmagnetic
materials.
9

Paramagnetism
• Paramagnetic materials exhibit
magnetism when the external
magnetic field is applied
• Paramagnetic materials loose
magnetization in the absence of
an externally applied magnetic
field.
•These materials are weakly
attracted towards magnetic field.
10
11

Ferromagnetism
• Ferromagnetic materials that
is highly attracted to magnets
and can become permanently
magnetized.
• The relative permeability is
much greater than unity and are
dependent on the field strength.
• These have high susceptibility
12
13

Antiferromagnetism
•Antiferromagnetism is the presence of
magnetic domains that are aligned in
opposite directions in magnetic
materials.
•These opposite magnetic domains have
equal magnetic moments which are
canceled out (since they are in opposite
directions). This makes the net moment
of the material zero. This type of
materials is known
as antiferromagnetic materials.
14

Ferrimagnetism
• Ferrimagnetism is a
phenomenon in which the
magnetic interaction
between any dipoles align
anti-parallel to each other
• A ferromagnetic material is
composed of more state of
different transition elements.
