The Essentials: Strong Co-ordination

 Strong coordination between MEP & Civil teams are
essential to avoid loss of material, man hours, time.

 Cut-outs, Openings are to be taken care of.

 Service lines of various discipline fouling each other must

be taken care off.

SWOT
Understanding SWOT Analysis
w.r.t. its related works

7
What is SWOT

 SWOT is a business or strategic planning

technique used to summarise the key
components of your strategic environments.

8
Your Three Strategic
Environments
Your three strategic environments are
 Internal Environment

 Industry Environment

 Macro Environment

Sometimes the last two are combined and

called your external environment

9
So, What is SWOT

SWOT is a summary of your

 Strengths
Internal
 Weaknesses
 Opportunities
External
 Threats

10
Strengths

Strength Defined: A strength is a core capability

of your workmanship/business where your
works have an advantage over your
competitor(s), which your customers value
i.e. you passed the better than your
competitors test.

You will find your strengths only when

completing your internal analysis.
11
Induction program– Aug 2011

Strengths

 SPCL is big
 SPC has been in existence for more than 145 years

 We have very good infrastructure, both in-house and at site.

These infrastructure includes:
 Cranes
 Hoists
 Batching plant
 Plant and Machineries
 Form Work
 Scaffolding
 Electrical switchgear
 DGs & others
 We have sound experienced engineers in various fields

Services Works 12
Weakness Defined: A weakness is a core
capability of your works/business where your
competitor(s) have an advantage over your
skills or business, which your customers
value i.e. you failed the better than your
competitors test.
You will find your weaknesses only when
completing your internal analysis

13
Weakness
 By just taking name of company i.e. SPCL keeping quite expecting
things to happen is impossible& ridiculous.

 Regular follow-ups with concerned parties are required to achieve

end results in time.

 Analysing the problems (risk management) should be made when

any problems are encountered.

 Detail study of relevant engineering design is required.

14
Opportunities

Opportunity Defined: An opportunity is an

environmental condition in your macro or
industry environments that can improve your
organizations competitive position relative to
that of your competitors.
You will find your opportunities when
completing your industry environment
analysis and your macro environment
analysis

15
Opportunities
 When there are certain diversifies coming across the way should be
grabbed, explore & expedite it.

 Reshape or revamp the infrastructure as & when it requires changes

to compete with external world.

 Getting acquainted with demographic changes cautiously.

--Multi-national investments
--Favourable bilateral policies
--Tax exemptions etc….

16
Critical Path

 Is that the sequence of activities and events where there is no “slack”

i.e.. Zero slack

 Longest path through a network

 minimum project completion time

17
Benefits of CPM/PERT

 Useful at many stages of project management

 Mathematically simple
 Give critical path and slack time
 Provide project documentation
 Useful in monitoring costs

18
Threats

Threat Defined: A threat is a forecast

environmental condition that is out of your
control and has the potential to harm your
businesses profitability.
You will find your threats when completing your
industry environment analysis and your
macro environment analysis

19
Threats
 To foll. few points which can be emphasized viz.;

--Upgrading our technology of operations in all aspects.

--Upgrading the working systems by implementing good engineering

& management techniques.

--Imposing penalty clause on non completion of jobs.

--Improper planning/not following the tasks as planned.

22
Questions Answered by CPM & PERT

 Completion date?
 On Schedule?
 Within Budget?
 Critical Activities?
 How can the project be finished early at the least cost?

23
example
Illustration of network analysis of a minor redesign of a product and
its associated packaging.

The key question is: How long will it take to complete this project ?

24
For clarity, this list is kept to a minimum by specifying only
immediate relationships, that is relationships involving activities
that "occur near to each other in time".

25
Before starting any of the above activity, the questions
asked would be

•"What activities must be finished before this activity can start"

•could we complete this project in 30 weeks?

•could we complete this project in 2 weeks?

One answer could be, if we first do activity 1, then activity 2, then activity
3, ...., then activity 10, then activity 11 and the project would then take the sum
of the activity completion times, 30 weeks.

“What is the minimum possible time in which we can complete this project ? “

26
We shall see below how the network analysis diagram/picture we construct
helps us to answer this question.

27
CRITICAL PATH TAKES 24 WEEKS FOR THE COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT

28
Packages are available to determine the shortest path
and other relevant information.

31
Limitations to CPM/PERT

 Clearly defined, independent and stable activities

 Specified precedence relationships
 Over emphasis on critical paths
