EXPOSITION
This event usually occurs at the beginning of a short story.

RISING ACTION
Event that happened in the story that move the action
along as the problem builds up and causes complications.

character's enemy is not another person, but
instead the natural world. Often, the protagonist is
stranded in the wilderness, threatened by a storm
or blizzard, or struck by a terrible disease, and
must fight for their life. Many adventure stories
center on a character vs. nature conflict.

CHARACTER VS. SOCIETY
In this type of conflict, a character struggles against some
element of society, whether it be a corrupt government, a

Many desires — including survival,

stability, human rights, happiness,
