Read the paragraph.
Decide what type of conflict is
presented:
• Jerome and his family are vacationing on an island in tropical
paradise. The waters are clear, the skies are big, and sand is clean.
Suddenly, when a rumble shakes Jerome's sister off of her beach
chair, Jerome remembers that the island on which they are staying is
one big volcano. Soon the mountain releases its fury, and the
eruption threatens every person on the island.

• It's the year 3030 and society is completely dependent on computers


and robots. A young boy named Domino is flying his hovering board
to school when all the machines start attacking people due to a
powerful computer virus.
• Annie and her family live on a farm in rural Kansas. When a
huge storm rolls in suddenly, she and her family must retreat
to the shelter, but all the animals are out grazing. Worse still,
a tornado has been spotted in their area.

• Janie is on a whitewater-rafting trip along a choppy river


when their guide suddenly has a heart attack. Now she and
the other passengers must learn to work together to survive
the treacherous rapids. As if things weren't bad enough, some
of the passengers have spotted a bear following the confused
rafters along the shore.
• After breaking his mother's favorite vase, Casey
struggles to decide whether he should tell his mother
the truth or attempt to hide his mistake and blame the
family dog.
Character vs. Character Conflict

An EXTERNAL conflict that involves a struggle, mental or physical, between


two characters in the story.

A wife and husband disagree about how their money should be spent.
Character vs. Nature Conflict

An EXTERNAL conflict that involves a struggle between the character


and the elements of nature that are beyond his/her control.

A family is trapped in their house because of a storm.


Character vs. Society Conflict

An EXTERNAL conflict that involves the struggle between a


character and the rules or laws that govern the society in which
he/she lives.

A woman is in a hurry and runs a red light.


Character vs. Self Conflict

An INTERNAL conflict that involves the struggle between


the character and his/her conscience.

A teenager has to decide between cutting class with her friends and staying
to take a test in a class she is failing.
