CONFLICT IN “THE RAIN CAME”

1. Character vs self:
The main character, Oganda, experiences an internal conflict. She is torn between her desire to marry the man
she loves, Osinda, and fulfilling her role as a sacrificial young woman to bring rain to her village. Oganda's
internal struggle revolves around choosing between her personal happiness and the well-being of her
community.
2. Character vs character:
Oganda also faces conflict with her father, Labong’o. Labong’o is a village leader and strongly upholds the
traditions and customs of their community. He believes in the sacrificial rituals and expects Oganda to sacrifice
her life. However, Oganda resists and challenges her father's authority, leading to a conflict between them. This
conflict arises from the clash between Oganda's individual beliefs and desires and her father's adherence to
tradition and societal expectations. It highlights the tension between generations and the struggle for autonomy
and self-determination.
3. Character vs society:
Oganda also faces a conflict with society. The entire village expects her to accept the role of the sacrificial
person, believing that it will bring rain and save them from drought. However, Oganda questions the
effectiveness and fairness of this tradition. She challenges the societal norms and expectations, causing tension
and conflict between herself and the community.
4. Character vs nature:
The conflict between the characters and nature is prominent in the story. The village is suffering from a severe
drought, and the lack of rain threatens their survival. The community believes that sacrificing a young girl like
Oganda will appease the gods and bring rain. This conflict reflects the struggle of the characters to control and
overcome the forces of nature.
5. Character vs the supernatural:
In "The Rain Came," there is a conflict between the characters and the supernatural realm. The villagers believe
that the gods control the rain, and they must perform rituals and sacrifices to appease them. Oganda questions
the efficacy of these rituals and challenges the belief in the supernatural, leading to conflict between herself
and those who firmly hold onto these beliefs.
6. Character vs god:
The conflict between characters and God is another important aspect of the story. Oganda questions the
intentions and actions of the gods, particularly in demanding human sacrifices to bring rain. She challenges the
traditional religious beliefs and rebels against the idea that human lives should be sacrificed to appease a higher
power. This conflict between Oganda and God is a reflection of her growing doubt and defiance towards
established religious practices.
