a. Motivation

Observe the following pictures.

What is the character doing in the first He is quite confused on the direction that he
picture? is going to take. He needs to choose between
the two, so he has to make a decision.
Very good!
How about the second picture? The child is confused, or the child doesn’t
know how he is going to stop his parents
arguing or fighting.
What about the third picture? The area is totally flooded. The civilians can
hardly do their routine. Good thing there are
policemen who rescued them. They are
actually a hero and a blessing to all of the
people. So, we must be grateful to them.

Very good! After seeing those pictures, I’m

sure you have thought of words that may
refer to them. Can you tell me these words? *Problem
*Struggle
*Opposing Forces
*Tension
Excellent!
Now we have three words and one phrase,
can you make them into just one word? It
begins with letter “C” and it has eight letters. Conflict sir.
Very Good!
So, that is what we are going to talk about
this time. Our most essential learning
competency is; Discover the Conflicts
Presented in Literary Selections and the Need
to Resolve these Conflicts in Non-Violent
Ways.

b. Lesson Proper (The learners’ will listen.)

(The teacher briefly discusses the types of
conflict in literature.)
Conflict – struggle between opposing forces.
a. Internal Conflict (Man vs. Self) – A
struggle that takes place in a character’s
mind. This is also when a character deals
with his or her own mixed feelings or
emotions and struggle is inside one’s
head.
b. External Conflict – A struggle between a
character and an outside force.
Characters may face several types of
outside forces. The outside forces may be
another character. It may be the
character and/or his or her community
(society), forces of nature or
environment.
Subcategories:
Character vs himself -
It happens within character’s
mind.
Character vs. Character
– mostly seen in the form
of two characters against
each other. Does not have
to be a physical
confrontation; it can be a
battle between two ideas.
Character vs. Nature –
anything surrounding a
person. Can include
weather, objects, activities.
Anything external except
people.
Character vs. Society –
man struggles to follow the
rules and laws in the
society which serves as the
conflict within his or her
own community/society.
Character vs.
Supernatural - It pits
character against
phenomena like ghosts,
gods, or monsters.
Character vs
Technology - The
character resists
technological forces.
