Lesson 2:

• Personality
• Personality and Self-concept
• Holistic Development
Personality
• The easiest way to understand the concept of
personality is to look at it as a form of a mask
that an individual wears for others to see.
• Latin word “Persona”
• For Psychologist: Views or defines personality
as more than just what man projects for
others to see.
• Thus, there is no single or universal definition
of personality
Personality
• A pattern of relatively permanent traits
and characteristics that makes a person’s
behavior consistent and distinct.
• Traits – qualities that are inherently
unique, common to some group or
shared by an entire species but the
pattern is different for each individual.
• Characteristics – unique qualities of an
individual that include such attributes as
temperament, physique and intelligence.
**temperament – behavioral and emotional
predispositions that were present at birth.
Types of Self-concept
1. The subjective self or the
existential self
- Formed and developed during the infancy stage.
- The most basic self-concept and it involves the awareness that you
are a separate and distinct individual compared to others.
2. The objective or the categorical
self
- Formed during infancy stage
- It is the understanding that you are defined or you can describe
yourself in terms of different categories, such as being a boy, having
a black hair, being tall etc.

3. The emotional self

- Formed during the early childhood stage
- Focuses in emotional regulation where your ability to
control and express emotions and emotion-related behavior
is acquired.
4. The social self
- Emerges during early childhood.
- It revolves around the increasing awareness that you are
part of society and that you have different roles to play
depending on the situation.

5. The psychological self

- Understanding that you have enduring psychological
characteristics.
- Begins during middle childhood
5. The valued self

Personality and Self-
concept in Social
Interaction
• Personality and self-concept are essential components of who
you are.
• They matter greatly as they play a large influence on how you
think, feel and behave.
• They are key factors that determine how you deal and interact
with other people.
Developing a Healthy
Self-Concept
• Knowing yourself, determining and
understanding your strengths, weaknesses,
and potentials.
• Being honest with yourself and being true
to who you are and what you value.
• Taking responsibility for your actions and
choices.
• Loving and accepting yourself as you are,
knowing that you can improve and develop
any aspect of yourself that you choose.
Holistic Development:
Thoughts, Feelings, and
Behavior
Thoughts
• It usually originate from things we have
learned both in a right way and a wrong
way.
• Malcognition and Maladpative
mechanisms.
• The thoughts that potentially affect our
attitude negatively are commonly
associated with an irrational belief
represented by a statement that echoes
in our heads.
• A way for a malcognition to be corrected
is by replacing it with something positive.
• A therapeutic approach would be to say
a positive statement about yourself
everyday, when you are alone in your
routines.
Feeling
s
• It is related to our thoughts.
• It relates to behavior in a similar
manner.
• It is a common therapy to allow
people suffering from
depression or hyperactivity to
have them express their
impulses and emotions into
socially accepted forms. But
since, the strength of emotional
stability varies among
individuals, we cannot stigmatize
sensitive people and compare
them with “stronger”
individuals.
Behavior
• Primary output of our attitude.
• It also affects our thoughts and
feelings, ultimately leading back
to its source – attitude.
• Overt behavior – expressed
consciously
• Covert behavior – occurs beyond
our awareness, in our blindspot.
• Feelings(affect) and behavior
relate to each other
interchangeably
• Thoughts(cognition), like affect,
are also related to behavior.
