PBIS

BLACKSBURG PRIMARY
WHAT IS PBIS?
• PBIS generically references “a multi-tiered behavioral framework used to improve the integration and
implementation of behavioral practices
• It is not a specific program or curriculum. Rather an approach.
WHY SHOULD WE DO IT?
• What does it hurt to do it?
• Our students are not learning correct social behaviors at home so instead of punishing them we need to
teach them.
• The student deserve a positive school environment that is established and consistent.
TIER ONE
• Whole School- classroom and nonclassroom
• Preventing problem behaviors by implementing high quality learning environments for all students and staff and across all
settings
• Consistent rules and routines- school wide and in the classroom
• Praise for appropriate behavior
• High Quality Education
• Teachers are warm and caring
• Ample opportunity to talk to teachers and peers about their interest and culture
• Organized environments that encourage exploration and higher level thinking
• Opportunities to collaborate with peers and practice social skills
• Family communication frequently
TIER TWO
• Target intervention for the group of kids tier one intervention wasn’t affective on.
• Providing more focused, intensive, and frequent small group-oriented responses in situations where
problem behavior is likely.
• Target the unwanted behavior- teach a new behavior to replace it.
• Social clubs- practicing social rules
TIER THREE
• The few kids tier one and tier two did not work on. This is specific to the individual child.
• Providing most individualized responses to situations where problem behavior is likely.
• Keep using tier one and tier two
• Understand the students individual strengths and needs.
• Set up a plan with the family to target the behavior. Set up a multi element intervention to focus on all
aspects of the students life.
HOW TO IMPLEMENT
• EVERYONE on board.
• Consistent school rules and procedures
• Bender gave school rules at the beginning of the year (also great classroom rules)
• Procedural signs in common areas. (bathroom, hallway, cafeteria)
• Praise desired behavior
• Use points with treasure cart and PBIS Punch Prizes. Send home parent sign up for PBIS app
• Kudos notes sent home. Turn in kudos kids for a monthly drawing to win lunch with the principal
• WOW board in the classroom
• Whole class incentives- feel free to share ideas!
• Semester Celebration- PBIS Party
CONSEQUENCES NOT PUNISHMENT
• Start with reinforcing positive behavior
• If that doesn’t work try redirecting the student. You are not in trouble this is a second chance! Ex. I don’t think that’s a spot
where you are doing your best work why don’t you try…
• If this doesn’t work try to pull the student aside for a private chat. Allow the student to take responsibility. They need to tell
you what they did wrong and how they will fix it in the future.
• If it is a persistent problem try to organize a think corner. Time for the student to reflect on what happened. Have them
write or draw what happened.
• We are not going to punish students we are going to give logical consequences. Ex. If you don’t use the materials correctly
you can’t use them for the rest of the day. Ex. If you talk during a lesson you don’t get to talk during independent work
time.
• Teach the students if…..Then…
