COMPRESSORS

GENERAL TYPES OF COMPRESSORS:

Non Positive Displacement Compressors:

In this type of compressor in which air / gas is thrown at high
velocities wherein the velocity energy is converted into pressure
energy with the help of high speed rotors, diffusers & vanes.

Example;

a) Centrifugal compressors
b) Ejectors

GENERAL TYPES OF COMPRESSORS:

Positive Displacement Compressors:

In this type of compressor in which air / gas is compressed in a
closed compartment wherein the pressure goes on raises
positively for each & every stroke or rotary movement until the
volumetric efficiency becomes ‘zero’ or failure occurs.
Example:
a) Reciprocating
b) Rotary vane
c) Straight lobe
d) Rotary helical screw

PRECOMISSIONING DETAILS

Layout:

1. The location should have enough space all around

(approx. 3 feet) to carryout mechanical maintenance (piston rod
pullout & crankshaft removal clearance to be kept in mind
additionally) and be well ventilated to take away the heat and
should have windows / rolling shutters with ramp for cross
ventilation and movement of heavy materials & preferably have a
high ceiling with exhaust fans.

2. Proper arrangement of trenches for electrical cabling,

piping, instrumentation should be provided keeping in mind the
location of cooling tower and Main electrical Control room.
PRECOMISSIONING DETAILS

Foundation:

1. The terrain, say clay, sand, rock , filled soil & soil bearing
capacity to be checked before casting the foundation.
Corrective action to be taken in consultation with civil experts (
should not go exactly as per mfgrs. Drawing),particularly for
reciprocating compressors as they will exhibit unbalanced forces .

2. Rotary screw compressors does not require any

foundation but can be anchored to a flat and leveled floor with
small pocket holes or vibration mounts
PRECOMISSIONING DETAILS

Piping:

1. The inlet piping should be done as per mfgrs.

recommendation since it is likely to give acoustical vibration , the
discharge pipings be made not less that the discharge size
provided by the manufactures, to avoid pulsation's and pressure
drop till to the receiver.

2. The control piping should preferably be done with rust

preventive pipes (ss or G.I coated).

3. It is preferable to have a loop header for the plant air piping

and to have a positive slope towards one side to get the
condensate drain /collection done.
PRECOMISSIONING DETAILS

Piping:

4. It is better to have the plant air piping size designed

bigger (in dia ) to have the least pressure drop at the utilization point
(since loss of pressure is loss of energy)

5. Usage of flange joints and weldable materials is advised .

Threaded / G.I and malleable cast iron fittings are tobe avoided to
the extent possible to avoid air leakages .
