Grammar
Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of language. Its
also one of the more difficult aspects of language to teach
well.
Goals and Techniques for Teaching
Grammar
 The goal of grammar instruction is to enable students to
carry out their communication purpose
 This goal has 3 implication :
1. Students need overt instruction that connects grammar
points with larger communication contexts
2. Students do not need to master every aspect of grammar
point
3. Error correction isn’t always the instructors first
responsibility
1. Overt grammar instruction
Instructors will take the advantages of providing explanation that
give students understanding in every point of grammar,
A. Teach grammar point in target language, the goal is to
facilitate understanding
B. Limit the time yo devote to grammar explanation to 10
minutes
C. Presenr grammar points in written and oral ways to address
the needs of students in different style.
2. Relevance of grammar instruction
In communicative competence model, the purpose of learning
grammar is to learn language of which the grammar is a part.

Compare the traditional model and communicative


competence model for teaching English past tense :
a. Teaching the regular –ed from with its two pronounciation
variants
b. Teaching double rule for verbs that end in d
c. Hand out a list irregular verb that have to memorize
d. Do pattern practice drills for –ed
e. Do substitution for irregular verb
3. Error correction
In responding to student commuication, teachers need to be
careful not to focus on error correction to the determent of
communication and confidence building. Teacher need to let
students know when they’re making error so they can work
on improving.
