Sierra de la Macarena
The Sierra de la Macarena is a mountain range
independent of the 3 mountain ranges, and is considered
as one of the most important wildlife refuges on the
planet. La Serranía de La Macarena presents the Hybrid
Wetland Rainforest biome of the warm thermal floor, with
trees large size of 30 to 40 meters high, with a closed
cup and permanent foliage, which loses completely
towards the months of December and February.

Origins
The Sierra de la Macarena natural park
have his origins in the biological natural
reserve de la Macarena. It was founded in
1948 and protected legally throught act
1989 from september the first, 1989

Location
It covers 630,000 hectares with a
temperature ranges between 24°C and
more. And is located in Meta, in the
jurisdiction of the municipalities of La
Macarena plateaus with very beautiful views
like Sanjuan de Arama and Puerto Rico

Birdlife
The birdlife of the Reserve of La
Macarena registered until 1978
contains 456 species represented
in 65 families. Most of these
species have been reported in the
area currently covered by the
National Park.

Emblematic Species
From the Amazon: Paroaria gularis gularis, Piaya
melanogaster, Electron platyrhynchum pyrrholaemum;
From the Andes: Asio flammeus, Trogon personatus
personatus, Campephilus pollens, Cistothorus platensis
tamae; North American migrants: Anas discors, Pandion
haliaetus carolinensis, Actitis macularia, Coccyzus
americanus americanus.

Infrastructure
There’s infrastructures in La Curía and in the
Macarena’s town. There’s not sheets for staying
but you’re allowed to camp with the necessary
equipment. There’s no restaurant or food sells
nearby in La Curía. In La Macarena there’s
restaurants and hotels.

Advices
You should get vaccinated against yellow fever
and tetanus, and bring a first aid kit. Cotton
clothes, boots, raincoat, canteen, flashlight,
sleeping bag and hammock with mosquito net.
And do not leave trash, do not contaminate water
sources and do not destroy nature.
