2 FACTORS
AFFECTING THE
PHYSICAL GROWTH
TWO FACTORS AFFECTING PHYSICAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Physical growth and development is the product of HEREDITY

and ENVIRONMENT.
HEREDITY

1 Is biological process of transmission of traits from parents to offspring

Genes are the basic carrier of hereditary trait and classified as do

2 minant (strong genes) and recessive genes (weak genes).

Sex and other physical traits is determine by the combination of

3 chromosomes and genes during fertilization.

Chromosomes are thread like tissues that carries the genes. Classified into trait
4 chromosomes (22 pairs) and gonosome or sex chromosomes (23rd). The sex of t
he offspring depends onto the gonosome from the father and the mother.
ENVIRONMENT

Refers to the factors to which the individual is exposed after conception to

1 death which includes learning and experiences.

Environmental factors such as diet, nutrition and disease play

2 an important role in physical development.
BODY IMAGE
BODY IMAGE
Refers to how individual
perceive, think, and feel
about their body and
physical appearance.

• Height
• Weight
• Skin colour
• Clothes
• Hairstyle

BODY IMAGE

Body image can affect both adolescent's physical and

psychological well-being.
Younger women and girls - poor body image.
Adolescent boys - negative self-image.

However, girls are more concerned than boys

about their physical appearance and their overall
self-image.
Perception of
being too fat

THEORIES OF THE PHYSICAL SELF
THEORIES OF PHYSICAL SELF
• The theory of physiognomy suggests that a person’s
physical characteristics such as facial features and body
structures could be related to a person’s character or
personality.
• According to the ancient Chinese practice of face reading,
the face is a three dimensional reflection of “Who we are
and How life affected us.”
• The practice is rooted in the five element theory – intricate
theory uses the elements of water, wood, fire, earth and
metal as archetypes for everything occurring in the
natural world.
• These are correlated to seasons, colors, shapes, sounds
as well as facial features, body types, body’s major
organs and behavioral tendencies.
• Face readers observed how facial features and markings
corresponded to a person’s mental, emotional, and
physical make up.

CESAR LOMBROSO
Italian criminologist and physician.

“BORN CRIMINAL”
Anatomically identified by certain facial
characteristics of anomalies such as
having sloping forehead, ears of
unusual size, enormous jaw, high cheek
bones, prominent superciliary arches,
extreme size of the orbits and sessile
eats which are also seen in savages and
apes.
CESAR LOMBROSO

Criminals reverted to a primitive or subhuman

type of man having features resembling to apes,
early man and lower primates - some extent
preserved, in modern “savages”.

Criminals who commit different types of crimes

distinguished based on their different physical
anomalies.

Lombroso’s research methods were clinical

and descriptive with precise details of skull
dimension and other measurements.
