What Is Gradient ?
Gradient

 In vector calculus, the gradient is a multi-variable generalization of

the derivative.
 The gradient of f is defined as the unique vector field whose dot product with
any unit vector v at each point x is the directional derivative of f along v.

 In the three-dimensional Cartesian coordinate system with a Euclidean

metric, the gradient, if it exists, is given by:
Motivation

 Consider a room
 Constant temp T (scalar)
 Points T(x,y,z)
 Gradient will show the
direction.
 Change ni temp at
various points.
Curls

 In vector calculus, the curl is a vector operator that describes

the infinitesimal rotation of a vector field in three-dimensional Euclidean
space.
 The direction of the curl is the axis of rotation.
 The magnitude of the curl is the magnitude of rotation.
 The curl of a vector field F, denoted by curl F, or ∇ × F
Divergence

 In vector calculus, divergence is a vector operator that produces a scalar

field.
 The divergence represents the volume density of the outward flux of a vector
field.
 It is defined as the scalar-valued function
