SURFACE WATER GARBAGE AND

OIL (SWAGO) COLLECTOR BOT

RESEARCHERS:

AKA JANE R. CORPUZ
INTRODUCTION
• Water is essential for the survival of all forms of life. In order to help protect the
environment, the Researchers decided to continue the previous Researchers’ study, the
SWaG Collector Bot which focused on cleaning bodies of water. The motivation
behind this study is the fact that environmental changes takes place in the world
which is generally caused by human activities. This project improves the bot wherein it
has convenient features other bots do not have. SWaG, now SWaGO with the
presence of Oil Skimmer, used CDs as a tool for skimming oil and plastic bottles as
the floater. This bot was able to eliminate solid wastes on the water surface including
oils spilled. In addition, another container was added for the oil collected. This allows
people to reuse the collected oil that can serve as a lubricant or fuel if processed
and has monetary value. Recovering these said oils increases the chances of a free-
living marine life. It minimizes the numbers of dangers to endangered underwater
species due to the pollution of water.
• The automation feature leads the bot to wander off too far, thus, needed the
full attention of the researchers during the collection of wastes. Moreover, a
solar panel was attached, and it generates electricity by absorbing solar
energy from the sun which was used to lengthen the life span of the bot.
STATEMENT OF THE OBJECTIVES
This study aims to improve the previous version of the bot.
Specifically, it intends to :
• Attach a functional oil skimming mechanism to the Bot.
• Test the bot’s functionality in terms of:
• Capability to collect oil.
• Capability to collect solid wastes.
STATEMENT OF THE NULL HYPOTHESIS

The SWaGO Collector Bot is not capable of meeting the Researchers’

expectations regarding its functionality and safety.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The significance of this study is that it serves as a collector for oil spilled in the
water. This bot is able to lessen the oil including garbage to clean the water
surface that would greatly benefit the environment and the people such as
having a healthy marine life and resources.
SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The study concentrates on the innovation of the bot by adding oil skimmer, which
enables it to collect garbage as well as oil. The device is only capable of
collecting wastes in bodies of water and cannot collect in land masses. It is
limited only with calm waves.
METHODOLOGY
• Equipment
Pliers, for cutting wires.
Grinder, for cutting the PVC.
Screwdriver, for tightening and loosening screws.
Soldering Iron, for soldering wires in the circuit.
Drills and Beats, for drilling holes in the PVC.
Laptop, for programming the MCU.
Saw, for cutting the pipes.
Sealant, for sealing the pieces of pipes in the improvised conveyor belt.
Materials
Arduino Nano/Uno Microcontroller unit- A device used to manage the behavior
of the bot.
Ultrasonic Sensor- A sensor used to detect the distance of the bot from any
object that is in front of the bot.
H-Bridge Motor Diver- A module connected to the MCU used to control the dc
motors.
3V DC Motors- An output device that makes the bot move.
Propeller- A device used to drive the bot on bodies of water.
Wire/ Jumper Wire- Used to connect the module parts in the circuit.
Solar Panel- Used to prolong battery life of the bot.
Pool Noodle- Enables the device to float.
Pipes- The body of the bot.
Rubber Scraper -when in contact with the PVC Rubber it scrapes the oil
off.
Storage Box- container of the oil collected.
Zip Tie- keeps a tight seal on the plastic bottles.
Plastic bottles- carries the bot on the surface of water.
Compact Disc- responsible for collecting oil.
Sizes:
½’’ Tee pipes
½’’ Elbow pipes
¾” PVC Pipes
½” PVC Pipes
Number of Pipes:
Tee Pipes- 10 pieces
Elbow Pipes- 12 pieces
CREATION OF THE BOT

• Ready all needed materials in creating

the bot; Pipes (including elbow and tee
pipes), H-Bridge Motors Divers,
Ultrasonic Sensor, Arduino Nano/ Uno
Microcontroller Unit (MCU), 3V DC
(Domain Controller) Motors, Propellers,
Wires, Plastic bottles, Rubber Scraper,
and Storage Box.
MEASURE THE WIDTH, LENGTH, AND HEIGHT OF THE

ASSEMBLE AND CONNECT THE CUT PVC PIPES TO
CREATE THE BODY STRUCTURE OF THE BOT.
A 13 cm of ¾” PVC Pipe was
added for the rotation of the
conveyor belt.
9 pieces of 4 inches pipe with a width of 1 cm is attached on the
nylon screen using sealant to create an improvised conveyor belt.
Attach 6 Plastic Bottles using
zip ties to the side of the
pipes.
Connect the Arduino Nano, H-
Bridge motors, 3V DC motors,
Ultrasonic Sensor, Propellers,
and Solar Panel using wires
and put it in a container.
• This is a prototype of an actual device that can collect garbage and oil spills
on the surface of water.
