Rosa Parks

An American Activist
• Rosa Parks was an American Civil Rights activist.

• She was called “the mother of the freedom movement”.

• Her actions influenced a generation of activists and human


rights defenders all around the world
The bus incident

• On December 1, 1955, when she sat in the middle of the


bus, the driver told her to get up and move to the back so
a white driver could sit in her place

• Rosa Parks refused to let her place to a white person and


she was arrested

• Her move led to many protests in the USA and she


became a symbol of freedom
• At the time, black people were forced to stand up and let
their place if there was no seat available on the bus.

• Like many people, Rosa Parks could not take to be treated


as a low class citizen anymore.

• This was a time of change for African American citizens of


the United States
The result and the change in
the law
• Rosa Parks’ actions led to a change in the law.

• It was called the Montgomery Bus boycott after the event.

• The boycott lasted more than a year.

• After the protests the law changed and black people were
able to sit wherever they wanted on the bus.

• Nowadays, Rosa Parks is seen as an important symbol


against racial division
